Starkville, Mississippi is a city in the U.S. state of Mississippi and the county seat of Hinds County. The population was 71,814 at the 2010 census. Starkville is home to the Starkville State University which was founded in 1881 and became a national university in 1967. It also has a large hospital, Hinds County Hospital, as well as several small businesses and schools located within its boundaries. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Starkville were Dutchmen who arrived from Holland in 1697 and built a trading post on the Scioto River. In 1794, French traders landed at Anse aux Meadows on the Stroudsburg River; they soon abandoned their attempt to establish a fur trade route between Mobile Bayou and Natchez region because of Native American hostility towards white people. In 1801, General Andrew Jackson's forces burned down the Dutch post along with all other buildings within sight of Fort Moultrie on Lake Pontchartrain after learning that it had been used by Indian traders to ferry goods back and forth between Natchez and New Orleans. The area around present-day Starkville was first settled by free people of color called Creek Indians who had migrated from East Tennessee during British rule during the mid-19th century. They were joined by freed slaves arriving through purchases or transfers made by General Jackson while he was Commanding United States Forces in Reconstruction following his inauguration as President of America on January 20, 1865.
