Tupelo, Mississippi is a small town located in Harrison County, Mississippi on the banks of the Yazoo River. Tupelo was platted in 1836 by General James Wilkinson and named for his brother-in-law, Solomon Boone. The first white settlers arrived in 1837 and built their homes around what is now the downtown core. The town developed rapidly during the 1840s as farmers from surrounding counties relocated to Tupelo to escape floods caused by the nearby Yazoo River. In 1846, Tupelo became one of five towns within Harrison County created when it was split off from Fayette County. The population of Tupelo grew steadily during the 1850s and 1860s as cotton plantations were established in the area. By 1870, Tupelo had a population of 4,000 residents and was an important center for trade with adjacent states. In 1865, however, Union troops burned down most of the town following a skirmish with Confederate forces at Battle Creek Bridge over the Yazoo River. After this event, much of Tupelo's development slowed as merchants relocated to other communities in Harrison County or left altogether. In addition, although there are remnants of buildings and streets from early days remaining today, few people live in or visit Tupelo anymore due to its lack of amenities and AM radio service which made it an attractive location for businesses during World War II.

It is the second-largest city in Jackson County after Jackson. Tupelo was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants who arrived in 1819 and named it for their old homeland of Ulster. The first store opened in 1825 and the first post office was on May 1, 1830. In 1863, Confederate General Robert E. Lee's army invaded Mississippi and besieged Tupelo; however, Union General Ulysses S. Grant relieved them before they could take it. The town experienced several times its share of violence during Reconstruction (1865-1877). Following the end of Reconstruction, white supremacists and Ku Klux Klan members terrorized African Americans with impunity until the late 1920s when some progress was made to address race relations In recent years there has been increasing development around downtown and new bars and restaurants have begun to open up in that area as well as more housing developments being built throughout town which has helped to attract businesses like hospitals and other professional services to town center Today’s Tupelo community is both vibrant and diverse with a rich history that can be seen all around town including numerous historical landmarks such as Old Military Store Museum where you can view artifacts from local skirmishes during Reconstruction or visit the reconstructed courthouse which served as a polling place during various elections over time
The Tupelo Massacre occurred on November 1, 1866, when Confederate soldiers killed nine black people in the town of Tupelo, Mississippi. The massacre was part of a larger event known as the Meridian Crisis.
