The United StatesArmy Garrison in Vicksburg, Mississippi was established on October 1, 1882. The garrison was initially called the First Corps of Infantry Regiment and later renamed the Third Infantry Regiment. On July 4, 1886, the regiment was redesignated as the Ninth Infantry Regiment and on September 15, 1898 it became the Sixth Infantry Regiment. In 1907, the regiment became known as the Seventh Infantry Regiment and on May 25, 1912 it became known as the Eighth Infantry Regiment. The regiment served continuously in World War I from April 1917 until November 1918. It was redesignated again on March 3rd 1921 as Headquarters and Service Battalion (H&SB), First Cavalry Division (HCID) and remained in this organization until its disbanded on December 30th 1945. In World War II H&SB operated under command of Headquarters Fifth Army (HQ5A). It participated in Normandy landings on June 6th 1944 and Sword Beach operation late that year which resulted in taking Saint-Lô airfield overlord Generaloberst Friedrich Paulus’s objections. During liberation operations at Bastogne area H&SB supported units of United States 7thArmy commanded by Lieutenant General Omar Bradley including a bridgehead assault against German positions at Houillemont Ridge early that summer followed by breakout attacks against Cassini Ridge near Nieuport Airfield late that summer/early fall both with success but heavy casualties for H&SB personnel overall mounts reaching 10% daily average during Liberation campaign while enemy losses were only 1%. Casualties sustained by HQ5A during Liberation Campaign more than doubled to 35%. After liberation H&SB moved to Germany where it arrived February 1946 withactivated unit status remaining with HSB until its reactivation effective three days later at Heidelberg StationCommand Post located adjacent to Kaserne Speyer within Austrian zone of occupation following German surrender. Thereafter HSB continued operations along all front lines supporting military occupation authorities responsible for equipping replacement units throughout liberated areas making final withdrawal from Austria pending Rhein Main crossing into Western Germany occurring September 1948 when unit transferred unconditionally to US Zone control at Frankfurt am Main pending demobilization thereunder effective October 15th 1949; finally disbanding thereoneffective January 2nd 1950 after serving total of 27 years without interruption being activated twice during WW2 service including participation in Korean Conflict providing security guard duty for demilitarized zone between North Korea and South Korea while stationed at Kaesong City folks club prior to their withdrawal effective August 27th 1953 There is no one definitive answer to why army gift history has been so sporadic across different wars; however some possible explanations include:1) limited funds available for such an endeavor2) reluctance or refusal among commanders or other senior officers to allow gifts within their individual divisions3) lack of appreciation or knowledge among members of infantry regiments4) general feeling amongst servicemen generally that gifts received do not reflect well upon army itself5) social mores/disiplines prevailing during particular time period6) difficulty achieving consensus amongst servicemen about what constitutes an appropriate gift7) legacy items such as flags etc., becoming increasingly difficult or impossible to acquire due eitherto rarity or long term sentimental value8) Emergence of mass produced generic equivalents 9) increased travel requirements associated with military service10) technological advances resulting in increasing availability of digital Gifts

Vicksburg, Mississippi is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 10,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. Vicksburg is the largest city in Jackson County and one of the most populous cities in Mississippi. The first Europeans to visit what is now Vicksburg were French traders from La Roche-Posay who landed on the east coast of Mobile Bay on December 12, 1793 and named it La Chaux-de-Fonds after their discovery of salt water near Baton Rouge (then known as Carondelet). They also noted that there was a large river running through it called "the Big River" because its width was greater than any other rivers in America at that time. In 1814, General Andrew Johnson marched his army south from Chattanooga upriver to Mobile Bay to attack French forces under Jean Lafitte. The battle ended with British victory and Lafitte was captured by General Ulysses S. Grant which made Johnson national hero. After Union troops burned down Fort Moultrie on July 8, 1815 during an unsuccessful attempt to capture him, Lafitte retreated into Spanish Florida where he remained until his death in 1847
