Yazoo City, Mississippi is an unincorporated community in Yazoo County, Mississippi. It is located on the Yazoo River at its junction with the east-west road known as U.S. Route 65. The Yazoo River forms part of the border between Yazoo and Jackson Counties. The community was platted in 1871 by a group of white men who had migrated from Vicksburg, Mississippi to find new land after the Battle of Montero Bridge. It was named for James Fenton Yazooside, a Scottish doctor and member of the United States Geological Survey who surveyed much of this area in 1849-50. The first settler in what is now Yazoo City was John Ferguson, who arrived there in 1865 from Tennessee. He built a log cabin on what is now Old US Highway 65. In 1870, another Scotsman named Alexander Macdonald settled here and started a small grocery store that still stands today near present day Main Street and 2nd Avenue NW. By 1872, most of the new settlers had moved out because of development along US Highway 65 which increased traffic and made life difficult for small farmers living close to the highway's route through town center. In 1876, two white men named Jordonandamente and Powell began farming about northeast of town on high ground overlooking the river valley below which they built their home called "the Hill". One year later they sold their land to Wm Sibley for $2 per acre ($40 per mile). +$1 per acre (1880) = $60 total purchase price This shows how valuable high ground could become if it could be cultivated: since 1880 any increase above natural elevations resulted in additional profits for those owning or controlling such lands
