Yazoo City, Mississippi is a city in Yazoo County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 993 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Yazoo County. The Yazoo National Wildlife Refuge is located in the city. The present-day city of Yazoo City was founded on November 1, 1871 by antebellum settlers as a farm community called "City Point". The name "Yazoo" was chosen because there were no other cities in Mississippi at that time and it sounded like a place where things could go well. By 1865, when the Choctaw nation ceded its land to the United States, most of what is now Yazoo City had been laid out as part of Jackson Township which straddled the river between Natchez and Tupelo. In 1874 an act providing for township organization passed Congress and on July 3rd that year James Witherspoon became the first town clerk of Yazoo City Limits. On December 12th1875 three steamboats landed about seventy men at Cahokia Landing on the Arkansas River just upstream frompresent day Yadkinville after their journey from Memphis, Tennessee via Mobile Bayou. Soon afterward cotton plantations began to be erected along both banks ofthe river and navigation became impracticable so navigation ceased altogether until 1914 when a new channel was constructed connectingthe 2 rivers.(1) This event initiated important economic development within present day Yazoosixteenmile radius including many heavy manufacturing plantsincluding one built by Ford Motor Company (now known as Peregrine Group) during World War II.(2) Commerce boomedduringWWII with people evacuating to Shreveport Louisiana due to air raids; however commerceand industry slowly died away during peacetime until recently when new businesses have cropped up especiallyin information technology and healthcare.(3) Most residents today are descendantsof those who settled here over 150 years ago with several important ethnic groups being represented including African Americans (Blacks), Swedes (Swedes), Poles (Poles), Germans (Germans), Mormons (Mormons), Irishmen (Irishmen), Baptists (Baptists), Jehovah's Witnesses
