Yazoo City, Mississippi is a small city in the eastern two-thirds of Mississippi. It lies on the Yazoo River and is the county seat for Muskegon County. The population was 8,965 at the 2010 census. Yazoo City was founded in 1821 as a trading post on the Yazoo River by Colonel John Prentice and his brother James Prentice. The first permanent residents of Yazoo City were Methodist missionaries from Tennessee who arrived in 1827. They established a church and school in what is now downtown Yazoo City, but it closed its doors in 1833 because of financial difficulties. The city's first mayor was Elijah Hicks, who served from 1838 to 1840. In 1850, Governor Alexander Stephens appointed George Washington Dixon as mayoralty; he served until 1851 when he resigned due to term limits. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewell made an unsuccessful attempt tocross the river into Union territory through Yazoo City while under cover of darkness; this event is often cited as being one of the reasons for secession of Mississippi from the United States. Afterward, most businesses within city limits closed orabandoned their operations due to prohibition laws enacted by Union authorities following Reconstruction-era America. However, some businesses reopened after passage of legislation legalizing restoration of white ownership within African American homes and businesses starting in1871 (the "Equality Law"). The first black teacher in Yazoo City was Miss Anna Jernigan who taught at Aiken School No. 4 from 1865 until 1870 when she moved to join her teachers at Tuskegee Institute where she became Headmistress (1870–1920). In 1913 Mayor Whetstone sent invitations for all citizens over 21 years old with property worth $500 or more to come forward and offer their land for development into townships with a population over 710 whites per square mile had been approved by state board; these townships were known as "pioneer" townships because they were created before statehood granted voting rights to African Americans in Mississippi that year - an event which has been referred to as "The Birth Of Black Mississippians". These pioneer townships are now part-of Jackson County including parts of downtown YazooCity today
