The base played an important role during World War II as a strategic bomber and fighter station, and became more significant after the war when it became a ground-based missile test center. Arnold also hosted Reagan's inauguration in 1981 as President of the United States.
Arnold is a small town in Jones County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,581 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The first post office in Arnold was established on January 3, 1864. The name changed to Arnold on February 10, 1865. The first store in what is now Arnold was built by J.F. Ayer and his brother-in-law Wm Hines in 1871. The town site was platted by James Fenton and others in 1872 under the name "Valley Forge." The name was changed to "Arnold" on October 15, 1874 by Act of Congress when the Union Pacific Railroad completed its line through this part of Missouri. In 1876, local businessman Amos Butterfield donated land for a public square which became known as Butterfield Square today. In 1880, he donated land for a new school that would become Marshall Academy School District No 2 (now Marshall University). At that time only white children were allowed to attend schools here so black children had to go to nearby Manchester or Jefferson City; however they soon learned to walk or ride bicycles to school from their homes there also!

Arnold has been home to several businesses including: Armstrong's Furniture Store (now part of Sears), Jordon Hardware & Appliance Company, and Arnie's Pizza and Pasta restaurant since 1927. The city also hosts two annual events - the Arnoldsfest fairgrounds summertime event and the Putnam County FairFall carnival - which are both considered major tourist attractions in their respective townships. In recent years there have been some efforts to redevelop or move Arnie's Pizza and Pasta into new facilities elsewhere within town limits; however these have all failed to gain significant support from residents or from government officials due to concerns about potential business closures or tax implications should such an action occur outside of town limits.
