In 1865, Ballwin was the site of an important Union army encampment during the American Civil War. The area had been surveyed by General Robert E. Lee after the war and it became known as Camp Forrest because many of its soldiers were from Forrest's cavalry unit. In 1868, a new military post was established in Ballwin by General Order No. 1 and it was called Fort McNair. At Fort McNair, Union officers conducted drill exercises and studied strategy while Confederate troops practiced artillery fire. The fortification of Ballwin became increasingly important during the late 1860s because Confederate forces began to move into central Missouri in large numbers and because Union generals believed that they could not stop them if they moved into the town. On October 12, 1868, a brigade of Confederate troops under Colonel John Buford attacked Fort McNair but were quickly repulsed. soon after this attack, Union General Ulysses S. Grant ordered his army to move into central Missouri instead of defending Ballwin against a possible Confederate counterattack. By early 1870, most of the Confederates had evacuated eastern Missouri and much of western Arkansas so that Union forces had surrounded ballvin within a radius of about 25 miles around the town proper; however, some elements managed to escape or retreated towards Lexington (in northeast Kentucky) before finally surrendering on April 9th at 2 PM local time. During their retreat eastward across Arkansas country, these men left behind immense amounts of equipment including cannons, ammunition stores and other supplies which later helped support Federal forces in their victory over Rebel forces at Battle Creek on April 14th; thus endangering little more than isolated pockets around Ballwin until December 16th when all rebel activity in that vicinity ceased for good.]

Ballwin is a town in Johnson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 3,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. Ballwin was founded in 1873 and named for General Andrew Jackson Ball. It was incorporated as a village in 1907 and became a town in 1951. The name Ballwin comes from the Potawatomi word "balkin" which means "to run away." The first Europeans to visit what is now Ballwin were Frenchmen who sailed up the Missouri River on their way to expedition against the Shawnee Nation in 1763. General Andrew Jackson's forces had sacked this Indian village on his way north from Cairo, Illinois some weeks earlier and found its inhabitants living among cornfields near Raytown, Wisconsin Territory (now Kansas). Colonel James Kapp's force of three hundred men succeeded in driving out these Indians while they were gathering corn and cattle near present-day Springfield, Missouri on November 5th, 1803; they burned all but thirteen dwellings and killed or captured more than sixty warriors including Chief Little Turtle. In 1827 Drury moved his business operations to what is now Ballwin from Wintersville after purchasing six thousand acres east of Washington Township along US Route 66 In 1840 he marriedMechahetha Smith who later became known as Mrs. Lincoln On July 4th that year an event occurred that forever changed the course of history when two steamboats collided just upstream of where today's Fairgrounds stand killing both occupants: Captain John Dickey (1810-1868) from Independence, Kentucky passengers on SS Aquila d'Orleans commanded by Lieutenant Samuel White RNVR lost his life instantly with First Class PassengerElizabeth Cushing (1811-1893), wife of clergyman Ebenezer Porterchurch RNVR also lost her life as did any unborn child born beneath decks during those fateful minutes Mrs Dickey never recovered from her injuries which led to her eventually being forced into retirement at age eighty one thereafter remaining active until she passed away at home surrounded by family members less than two years later followed by Mr Dickey who returned to duty full time only four months later after repairs were made to Aquila d’Orleanswhich had been pushed back twenty feet due tthe collision USS Constitution Museum has since erected a plaque commemorating this noteworthy event Ballwin residents continue to enjoy considerable access privileges enjoyed by other municipalities located within Johnson County none more so than New Madrid Township which borders ballwin on its eastern edge . This township includes most notably New Madrid Lake extending for over five miles bordering ballwin on its south side creating an almost impenetrable obstacle across which boats must navigate prior to entering or leaving the lake making it an ideal location for recreational boating activities especially given recent flooding events that have caused significant damage .....
