Ballwin, Missouri is a small town in Ozark County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Ballwin is part of the Springfield–Ozark Micropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now makes up Ballwin was first settled by farmers in the mid-19th century. In 1867, three men from nearby Illinois purchased land and named it "New Market". They built a log cabin there and sold goods from their store to settlers in the area. By 1870, there were 25 people living in New Market. In 1872, James Aitken bought land near present-day Ballwin and renamed it "Aitkin's Grove". He developed it into a large cotton plantation with over 100 slaves working on it. The slave trade ended here about 1840 when Union General John J. Pershing burned Aitkin's Grove down after capturing its owner, William Hinson. In 1865, two young boys name George and Jesse ran away from home while they were still young children and started a wagon train that traveled northeast to St Joseph County in search of new homes and adventure. When they reached Springfield on July 4th 1865 they went into hiding until their family could find them safety ensconced among friends back at their farmstead nearpresent day Ballwin (then called "Fruitland"). They finally turned themselves in to authorities on October 9th 1865 and received several years hard labor for desertion - an event which would become known as the "Green Corn Rebellion". On November 15th 1865 George married his childhood sweetheart Lillie Mae Swenson at Liberty Baptist Church in Springfield; this event is also documented as being one of the most severe losses for the community during the Civil War era due to polygamy laws then still prevalent in many states across America.). After spending six months incarcerated at Fort Leavenworth (now Kansas City), Missouri under guard due to his military service rather than face execution for remaining unmarried upon release he returned home on December 12th 1866 riding with his bride Fahreen Beasley (nee Davis) who had been born free on May 6teenth 1864 near Lee's Summit,, Kansas Territory - making him one of only four white couples everto reach such an early milestone together during American history! later that year he founded what would be known as “The First Presbyterian Church” located just east of present day Ballwin on high ground overlooking Main Street – becoming responsible for building most all subsequent churches within range including those currently standing today! The first white person to reside in what is now Ballwin, Missouri was James Robertson in 1763. A Presbyterian minister and land speculator, Robertson owned a large tract of land that he sold for $1,000 to the General Court of Appeals on July 24, 1765. The first post office in Ballwin was established in 1805. On October 1, 1830, the village of Ballwin became a town under the name of "Bellevue." In 1837 Bellevue erected a schoolhouse and several other buildings. On November 3rd voters approved a referendum to change the name to "Ballwin" after Ulysses S. Grant, president at the time and later an important figure in American history. A store opened on Main Street in 1839 and by 1865 there were fifteen businesses operating in Ballwin with a population of about eighty-five people. By 1880 there were twenty-one businesses with a population of over one thousand people; by 1910 there were thirty-six businesses with a population of over five hundred people; and by 1920 there were forty-eight businesses with over one thousand people.
