Bolivar is a small city in the Ozarks of Missouri, United States. It was founded by pioneers in 1836 and named for José Bolívar, the Liberator of Venezuela. Bolivar is home to The University of Missouri-Kansas City, one of the most famous universities in the United States. As of 2019, Bolivar had a population of 14,834 residents and is the second smallest city in Missouri. Bolivar was founded by pioneers on October 17, 1836 by John Wetherbee and his wife Elizabeth Keyes Keyes. They came from Kentucky to start a new life in what was then Clay County, Missouri. The Keyes family were farmers who had come down from Kentucky to help settle this area. John Wetherbee built the first store here in 1837 and soon started selling goods that he grew himself: cottonseed oil, flour, bacon (which he traded with neighboring Arkansas), pork bellies and other groceries. He also raised chickens and pigs which he sold fresh or frozen until 1840 when he built a gristmill which processed cornmeal into meal for his customers. By 1850 Bolivar had two churches: one Protestant (Fenton Methodist) and one Catholic (St Patrick's). In 1861 Bolivar became part of Union County when it was created from parts of Union and Fayette Counties; it remained an independent municipality until its annexation by Kansas City in 1907. TheKeyes family continued to live here until their death in 1865 when their children inherited the community; after that it passed through several families before becoming part of KCMO’s current population on July 1st 1909 as part of voting results following Kansas City’s incorporation as an incorporated city under state law 15 years earlier than planned due to political pressure from local boosters associated with George Hearn son-in-law James Prentice who would become Mayoralty nominee later that year The key factor behindKCMO being annexed into KCMO rather than remaining an independent municipality like Bolivar was because at that time KCMO was already home to many large industrial companies including Armour Ammunition Co., Alcoa Aluminum Company - America's First aluminum plant - Pratt & Whitney Engine Workshops etc., so annexing either town would not have made much practical difference given KCMO's dominant position within Kansas City at that time

Bolivar was a small town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2000 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The town was founded by José Félix Bolívar on May 25, 1835 as a post office called "Las Vegas". The post office served Bolivar until it was discontinued in 1865. Bolivar first became known for its cattle and wagon trade (the town had two livery stables), but also produced flour and other agricultural products. In 1878, Bolivar built an sawmill and began to produce lumber. By 1904, the town had five stores and ten residences. The first school in Bolivar opened in 1875; it served addition until 1925. In 1902, a Methodist church Committee donated land for a new church which quickly became Yeshua Tabernacle Church (later renamed Emmanuel Episcopal Church). In 1916-17, Bolivar voters approved construction of a dam across the Arkansas River to provide irrigation water for their community; this dam remains in use today as the centerpiece of the village's landscape. In 1940, munitions production began at nearby Clearwater Arsenal; due to World War II shortages of steel and other materials, Bolivar residents helped build various local businesses that continue to operate today including First National Bank (founded 1919), Porter Grain Inc., Jiffy Lube Lock & Key (founded 1922), Plus Size Clothing Store (founded 1942), Grits 'n' Grains Bakery & Diner (established 1954), and Hunt Brothers Manufacturing Co.(established 1955). In 1951-52 when Stonington Shipbuilding Corporation merged with Bethlehem Steel Company to become DuPont Lead Mines Company Limited;bolivars residents supported plant expansion with grants from DuPont corporation In 1957 they elected their first female Mayor Mrs Ada Hargrave who served three terms before retiring in 1969 after being term limited she continued to serve as Vice Mayor during her last year as mayor
