Bolivar, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of central Missouri. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Bolivar is located on I-270 and U.S. Route 61 east of Jefferson City. The town was named for Simón Bolívar, who fought for independence from Spain in 1825 and won recognition as an independent nation by the United States in 1828. The first house in Bolivar was built about 1875; it burned down in 1903 but was replaced by a brick building that still stands today. Bolivar is home to two churches: First Baptist Church and Second Methodist Church. There are also several businesses including a lumberyard, hardware store, bakery, post office, barbershop, grocery store and restaurant. It has a public library which serves residents of the surrounding rural communities as well as Bolivar itself. The United States Naval History and Heritage Command’s history of the navy is extensive, dating back to its earliest days as an organized military force. The first U.S. Navy was established on July 4, 1775, when a group of volunteer seamen from Rhode Island joined forces with British sailors in the War for Independence. The early US Navy operated along coastal waters and was hampered by their lack of warships and accompanying naval forces. In 1807, Congress created the U.S. Navy Department under the command of Rear Admiral John Rodgers to provide a permanent navy presence in Washington D.C., after the fall of Napoleon Bonaparte’s French empire at Waterloo (1815). The navy grew rapidly during this period thanks to technological innovations such as steamboats and ironclad warships built at federal shipyards along the Potomac River Valley in Northern Virginia and Maryland (the “Old Navy”). In addition, appropriations were made for new ships, including frigates (a type of warship designed especially for colonial defense), submarines, destroyers, torpedo boats, and minesweepers; however these efforts proved fruitless because no one wanted to build warships that would compete with British vessels operating out of London dockside. In 1819 Congress passed an act which provided for a permanent navy based at Norfolk Harbor; this marked the beginning of what is known today as the “New Navy” era in American naval history. At this time there were over 400 commissioned officers in the U.S.-based fleet compared to just 20 or so British sailors working aboard large Royal Dockyard ships captained by English captains or Admirals acting under British control afloat or ashore across North America…. Commodore George Dewey later said that having 100 American officers aboard his flagship USS Olympia showed him how much better American shipbuilders could do than their Britishers counterparts….. During this period also many leading Americans such as Secretary James K Polk developed personal relationships with royalists within sections of King George III′s government around London who supplied them with technology they used against us…… Many other famous sailors during this time include Gideon Welles who served as Consul General at Havana during Spanish-American War; Samuel Chase who commanded USS Constitution duringauxiliary war against Mexico; Alfred Thayer Mahan whose battlecruisers helped sink Spanish fleets off Cape Horn; Jeffery Slocum's famed schooner Enterprise which won distinction as one of only four times a sailing vessel has ever been honored with both first place prize money AND awards from both major hemispheric oceanic navies
