Bolivar, Missouri is located in Raccoon County and is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, Bolivar had a population of 914. The community was named for Simón Bolívar, an 1828 Venezuelan independence fighter and author who helped lead the country from Spanish colonial rule. Bolívar's remains are buried in nearby Carthage. Bolivar was founded by early Mormon pioneers in 1836 as a small town on the Platte River. It grew rapidly during the 1850s when settlers displaced Native American residents in what is now Raccoon County. By 1870, Bolivar had a population of 2,500 people and became an important center for trade with Kansas and Nebraska. In 1872, the town was renamed after General James K. Polk to honor his role in Ulysses S. Grant's victorious Mexican-American War campaign. The town declined during the late 19th century as railroads replaced wagon trails as primary means of transportation within Missouri and nationwide. However, bolivarian sentiment persisted throughout this period and began to grow again after World War II when Arkansas engineer Harry Exley built a short railroad between Springfield (now St Louis) and Wichita Falls (now Wichita) through bolivarian territory in Oklahoma Territory. After Exley's death in 1948, local believers began planting mounds that soon numbered more than 100 markers across much of Raccoon County commemorating members of their community lost at war or other significant moments in its history

The region was known for its fertile soil and natural resources, which made it an ideal place to start a new life. In 1836, three men named John Brown and James K. Polk founded a town in what is now Bolivar County. They named their town after General Francisco José de Miranda y Costilla, who had helped lead Mexico during the Mexican-American War. The town quickly grew into a bustling community and became known for its fine shopping malls, banks, schools, churches and other important landmarks. Bolivar was chosen as the site of the United States capital because it had been ruled by Mexico since 1821. The decision to build the capital was made to create stability in the aftermath of the war and to provide leadership for America's growing economy. The city of Washington D.C., located about 30 miles away from Bolivar, proved difficult to manage and failed to take off as expected. As a result, Congress decided on Bolivar as the site for America's new national capital in 1853. The city continued to grow rapidly over the years and by 1870 it had reached its current size – including present-day Bolivar County – with over 100 businesses operating within its walls. However, due to financial problems caused by an influx of immigrants during Reconstruction Era (1868-77), Bolivar fell apart completely by 1880. It wasn't until 1932 that reestablishment of downtown began withulpation of much of what remained from previous years when bolivia lost all autonomy following military coup d'etat led by Carlos Mesa y Pinto

The town of Bolivar was founded by Captain Elijah Allred and his family on a small farm that they named after Simón Bolívar, the Liberator of Venezuela. The Allreds were among the first white men to live in what is now Bolivar County. By 1830, the population of Bolivar had grown to 10 people. In 1836, Captain James Kieft built a cabin in what is now Bolivar and began trading with Native Americans. In 1840, General Don Carlos Antonio de Montoya y Costilla established a military post in present-day Bolivar County and began trade with Native Americans again. The town of Bolivar rapidly grew into a thriving center for commerce and agriculture during the 19th century. Electricity was first introduced to the area in 1892 and became common throughout much of America by 1900. Bolivars schools were among the best in America during this time period. Many prominent citizens such as Judge James Fenton (1821-1920) and Mayor John Wigham (1847-1925) spent their childhoods here before moving on to become successful professionals or politicians. A cotton gin was built near present day Avenido de la Constitución in 1905 and helped spur economic development in nearby Ford City proper during the early 20th century. A lumberyard was also developed around this time along Avenida de la Constitución within walking distance from many homes across bolivia county . During World War II, local residents served in various combat units including American troops assigned to Polk County along with other military installations located within bolivia county . The postwar era saw growing prosperity for bolivia county as new industries sprung up like aluminum smelting and agricultural production; however, violence continued to blight society throughout much of this decade culminating with an infamous murder spree that left more than 30 people dead between 1964-1968 known as "the Texas Massacre."
