The National Guard of the United States of America was activated in 1881 as a militia to help protect the state of Missouri from invasion. The Missouri National Guard was formed on August 29, 1861. The original unit was the 1st Regiment of Missouri Infantry. The regiment served in the Union army during the American Civil War and was mustered into service on October 16, 1861. The regiment fought in battles such as Pea Ridge and First Bull Run. On November 17, 1861, the regiment was transferred to the Confederate army and fought in battles such as Second Bull Run and Seven Days Battles. In 1865, the regiment joined the United StatesArmy and participated in the Battle of Appomattox Court House. After its participation in this battle, the 1st Regiment of Missouri Infantry disbanded on December 14, 1865. In 1978, a new 1st Regiment of Missouri Infantry was organized and served in Cape Girardeau County until 1984 when it decommissioned again due to federal budget cuts. In 1992 a 3rd Battalion Arkansas National Guard Historical Museum opened at Fort Chaffee with historical documentation related to that state's role in World War II as well as local military history including units from Cape Girardeau County
Cape Girardeau, Missouri is a city in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, United States. The population was 953 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Cape Girardeau was Daniel Boone in 1767. The town was founded on the current site of downtown by Major General James K. Polk during the American Civil War as a Union soldiers camp and garrison town to protect traders travelling through the region from Confederate forces besieging Vicksburg, Mississippi. As Union troops withdrew from the war in 1865, much of the garrisontown became an open-air market and slave market until it was destroyed by Union artillery fire in 1868. In 1872, a group of businessmen led by George Sibley purchased a tract of land east of downtown for $5 per acre (about $ today). They named their new community "Cape Girardeau". The first post office opened in 1875 and remained open until 1959; its first ZIP code was 65110. The city's economy changed dramatically after World War II when there were increasing numbers of military personnel stationed here during World War II and then again following the Korean War and Vietnam Wars because Cape Girardeau became known as "the Mother City" for military services activities throughout those wars across America. In 1969, when Cape Girardeau joineds Metropolitan St Louis statistical area as part of changes authorized by Mayor Harry Byrd III following recommendations made by his Advisory Council on Economic Development with input from Area Commission members George Steuart and Johnnie Dodds, its original name reverted back to that which had been given to it two years earlier - "Cape Girardeaus". It has since undergone several major rebuilds including one initiated by Mayor Joe Lunsford which began July 1st 2009 with some $140 million dollars being injected into various aspects including art galleries/museums/historic sites etc., job creation through tax breaks available to businesses within our boundaries – all while maintaining high quality infrastructure such as streetscape beautification enhancements funded through bondsissued annually like everyone else within our boundary does!
