The first ship in the navy's torpedo boat fleet, USS Pigeon helped defend the harbor during World War I and was also used in Operation Coral Sea. In 1922, USS Constitution Museum ship was donated to Cape Girardeau by then Mayor John Gage. ThisShip became home of the city's only museum and is still on display today. In 1941, while on tour of naval ships at Naval Station Great Lakes, President Franklin D. Roosevelt presented USS Constitution Museum ship with an overhauled diesel engine which made it available for service in World War II as USS Yorktown (CV-8). During World War II, Yorktown played a major role in the Battle of Leyte Gulf and provided crucial support for amphibious operations across Asia and Europe. In 1946, Yorktown was decommissioned and placed into reserve at Naval Station Great Lakes before being sold to Japan in 1951 where she served as Kaga Kaiju Monzaikan (KAGA) until her sale to American interests in 1962. She currently resides at NAS Whidbey Island WA., serving as a museum vessel open to visitors from all over the world!

Cape Girardeau, Missouri is a city in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, United States. The population was 7,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Saint Louis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Cape Girardeau were French fur traders and missionaries who arrived in 1764. A post office called "Girardeau" was established in 1821, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The town site was named for General Pierre-Simon La Salle (1769-1834), one of Napoleon's generals during the Iberian Peninsular War (1808-1809). La Salle had been captured by Spanish forces at Saragossa on October 24, 1802, and taken to Havana where he was beheaded on December 12. His body was sent back to Paris where it was interred at Notre Dame Cathedral. In 1824, a group of citizens petitioned for a town charter because they saw no other way to provide public transportation between their homes and the business districts of St. Louis. The charter granted them this wish; however, due to financial problems soon after its issuance, the town never grew very large or wealthy as envisioned by its founders. In 1840s there were several floods that destroyed most of the houses near the river but not much else happened until 1870 when an act by Senator James Buchanan authorized establishment of a dam on the Arkansas River which made Cape Girardeau Lake became available for agricultural purposes and also created more jobs within the city limits than ever before! This new era began with prompt response from many private individuals who donated land to be developed into what we know today as downtowncape girardeaubourg (Downtown cape girardeaubourg). This area experienced rapid growth beginning with incorporation as a municipality on July 1st 1908 which allowed businesses greater access to critical local resources without having to worry about zoning or street numbers! In 1911 voters passed an ordinance authorizing annexation of neighboring communities – Maplewood (to the south) and Florissant (to the east). From then until annexation ended in 1970 there were over 20 annexations taking place each year! Today’s downtowncape girardeaubourg is home to some of St Louis’s most popular restaurants including Ziegfeld Follies Casino & Resort & Busch Gardens America!, Checkerboard HallBurgers restaurant & Brewery adjacent thereto as well as Overland Park Medical Center located just across Boulevard from Denny’s Restaurant!
