Creve Coeur is a small town in Missouri, United States. The population was 1,676 at the 2010 census. Creve Coeur is located in the western half of the state at 38°25′N 96°30′W. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The community has its roots in 1837 when two men named Gass and Garland purchased four acres (1 hectare) of land east of what is now Interstate 64 near modern day Creve Coeur Boulevard and Illinois Avenue. The men named their new town after crevices or gullies in the limestone hills to the south-west of their land purchase. By 1840, several other farmers had moved into the area and began to call themselves "CreveCoeurians". In 1849, two brothers by the name of Lyon founded a post office at Creve Coeur with mail service only to nearby Saint Louis. In 1861, John Sibley erected a store and hotel on what is nowAddressStreet in honor of his late father-in-law, General Andrew J.Sibley (1814–1893). A year later, he donated about 100 acres (40 hectares) along Area Road for local development including 400 blacksmith shops and 10 churches which were built between 1865 and 1880 according to one source The first school was organized on December 14th, 1868 by Mrs. Caren Bigham from Mount Vernon School District #3 who taught six students for $5/month out of her home until it burned down on January 3rd 1870 . Mrs Bigham's daughter conducted classes from then until 1944 when Mrs Cochran took over as teacher until her retirement on June 30th 1978 .
