The history of the Festus Army is a long and rich one. The town of Festus, Missouri was founded by Methodist missionaries in 1822, and has been home to an army ever since. The first military unit to be stationed in the town was the 3rd Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry, which arrived in 1827. In 1861, when Missouri seceded from the Union, Festus became part of Confederate Missouri. It saw some high-profile battles during the war such as Battle of Poison Springs and Siege of Corinth. After the war ended, many soldiers returned home andFestus slowly regained its former glory as a manufacturing center. However, it would not remain this way for long; in 1978, it was annexed by St. Louis County and renamed Ferguson. In 1886, it was renamed Festus after the then-Governor of Missouri, John Festus. The community had a post office from 1887 to 1903 and again from 1907 to 1912. It became a town on December 15, 1912. In 1948, Festus incorporated as a village and lost its right to self-government within three years because of complaints from other nearby towns that they were being encroached upon by Festus's size and seclusion. However, in 1978 it regained its right to self-governance through voter referendum. Festus is located at (38.566739,-93.098953). According to the 2010 census, its population was 3,376 people living in 1,664 households out of which 82% were white and 20% were African American; Hispanic or Latino made up 2%. Festus was a town in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Micropolitan Statistical Area. Festus began as a small community on the banks of the Missouri River north of Springfield. In 1853, it became the county seat of Clay County and remained so until 1907 when Lawrence took over that role. In 1859, Festus had six churches and 120 residents; by 1870, it had only 20 residents and two churches. However, during this time period there were also significant educational opportunities for its citizens due to its location on the river and its close relationship with Springfield. In 1895-96, Festus experienced a great fire that destroyed all but one of its buildings except for the library which reopened in 1897 with new books and an increased staff. At this time too many people were living in single-family homes which contributed to fuel shortages leading to several years of high school tuition protests before finally being solved through legislation legalizing private education in localities such as Festus. The community continued to decline until it merged with nearby Moberly in 1959 to form what is now Moberly-Festus Municipal Airport (MOB). As a result of this merger there were many changes both within and outside of Festus including some displacement of locals as well as increases in highway traffic throughtowns along I-55 corridor that resulted in decreased property values for much of downtown Funkstown which bordered on Moberly parkland eastward from Interstate 55 near where I-55 crossed into Indianola County line just south of town limits
Festivalus was a town in Missouri located on the east bank of the Arkansas River. The original town was founded by Gideon Finley in 1822, and it grew quickly due to its location and trade opportunities. The town was named for Festus, an biblical figure who helped lead Israel into exile after they were defeated by Pharaoh Ramses II. In 1836, Festivalus merged with neighboring communities of Carthage and Manchester to form the new city of St. Louis.
