Higginbotham, donated a small island in the St. Francois River to the city of St. Louis for use as an air and naval station. The city used the island for storage and launch pads for its navy until it was sold to St. Francis Hospital in 1904. In 1924, the hospital leased the island from Mr. Higginbotham and made it their medical research center before selling it to the University of Missouri-Rolla in 1938. The university used it as their main physics laboratory until 1957 when they moved to Columbia, Missouri and then again to St. Joe’s Regional Medical Center until they closed in 1992. Since 1994, marine gift history at Festus has been administered by the Marine Museum Foundation which is now located on the island that once housed Mr. Higginbotham’s donation! Festus, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of central Missouri. The population was 1,815 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was named for Festus Easley, an early settler. A post office called Festus was established in 1868, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1903. In 1902, a sawmill and gristmill were built in the town by Andrew Nelson. A railroad station was built on the line that ran through Festus in 1912. The community developed as a bedroom community for Springfield during the 1920s and 1930s; however, its population began to decline during World War II due to military deployment throughout central Missouri and lack of available housing. Today, Festus is home to a few businesses and two churches; as well as a library and several recreation areas including a football field and baseball diamond.

Festus was founded in 1834 by James K. Polk and his father, John C. Polk, as a town in Howell County, Missouri. It was named for General Festus Wilson of the Union army who died during the American Civil War. The town developed around a small general store and post office which were opened in 1835. In 1836, the Post Office moved to what is now downtown Festus and the store became a grocery business. In 1839, John Atherton built a sawmill on the stream that flows through Festus. This milling operation produced lumber for local buildings and other items until it closed in 1978. The first school in Festus was built in 1840 by Mrs. Elizabeth Hardesty with assistance from Mr. John Hartsock of St Joseph, Missouri who donated land for the school building and money also came from wagonloads of flour brought overland by traders from Great Britain. The first teacher was Miss Lydia Greenwell who taught until her death in 1865; then Druellen Smith took over until she resigned due to ill health about two years later before Druellen's husband took over for eight years before he retired too sick to continue teaching after World War II In 1846, Abraham Lincoln delivered an address at Fort Gibson (now Johnson City) which led to increased business patronage at the general store as people started traveling to attend his speeches throughoutthe Midwest . In 1850-1851, three men – G W Marshall (a blacksmith), Elisha Mott (a carpenter) & Hiram Sibley (an Odd Fellows member) erected a large frame house on Main Street near present day US Highway 24 west of town square where they lived while their businesses grew into what is now known as "The Mansion". This house served as both home and office until it burned down circa 1880 On October 8th 1861 when Confederate Captain Fitzhugh Lee surrendered Camp Douglas outside Of Defiance Springs MO , all slaves within 10 miles radius includingFestus were ordered free & this emancipation event is generally considered one of the beginning events leading up to Civil War In 1865, when Forrest succeeded Davis as Confederate President he issued an order freeing all slaves within seven miles radius includingFestus but some still remained behind at Camp Douglas so on January 1st 1870 Union General Robert Anderson besieged Camp Douglas resulting in most ofthe slaves being freed including Festus residents
