Jackson, Missouri is a town in St. Clair County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The railroad connecting Jackson to other parts of the country served as its major industry until it closed in 1984. The first European to visit this area was French trader Pierre Laclède on August 24, 1764. He named it "Ile d'Italie," after his homeland in Italy. A post office called "Jackson" was established in 1813, and remained in operation until 1836. In 1830, a group of entrepreneurs founded the town of Independence on what is now east side of Jackson Boulevard just north of I-435 (now K-6). They named their new community after James Kieft – then governor general of New York – because he had offered them land for their settlement if they could find another site with more water availability and an easily accessible road. The town quickly outgrew Independence and by 1834 had reached 3 miles square and contained about 100 homes. In 1835, Indian leader Black Hawk attacked Independence's main store; all but one resident were killed or taken captive before blacksmiths could build a counterattack force that drove him out of town. By 1840, Independence's population had swollen to 2,000 and included about 200 homes within a mile radius around downtown (the size limit for towns at that time). On October 10, 1840–one day after the admission into the Union of Missouri by Governor Thomas Curtis – representatives from twelve towns along the Saint Louis River Valley sent a petition to Ulysses S. Grant requesting his help defending them against threats from Native Americans living near their communities east of us old fortieth parallel (nowKansas City). On November 5th Grant responded with an order authorizing General Andrew Johnson to send three companies under commandant Colonel John Pemberton to suppress any Indian hostilities east of us old fortieth parallel “until further notice” which gave General Ulysses S Grant direct authority over all military affairs within our boundaries subject only to congressional approval (this act also created Fort Harrison on opposite bank Saint Joseph River). In 1814, General Andrew Jackson became president of the United States after defeating John Quincy Adams in a presidential election. He immediately began to Implement his "Equal Rights Amendment" to the US Constitution which would guarantee civil rights to African Americans. After three years of hard work, he had passed the amendment into law.
