Jefferson City, Missouri, is a city in the US state of Missouri. It was founded in 1821 by James K. Polk and is the second-oldest city in Missouri. The population was 524 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the confluence of the Kansas River and the Ness–Davis Canal, east of St. Louis. The first settler in Jefferson City was John Prentice, who arrived in 1821 from England with his family. He built a log cabin on a bluff overlooking the river near where present day Union Boulevard and I-55 meet. In 1827, brother Peter Prentice erected a permanent home along what is now Fourth Street and Main Avenue. In 1830, James K Polk moved to Jefferson City from Nauvoo, Illinois after winning election as President of the United States as part of an alliance formed to secure McCulloch's seat on Congress during the 1830s election season. Polk purchased 640 acres (248 ha) including parts of what are now Jackson Heights and Midtown Jefferson City from David Wilcox for $40 per acre ($2 million at current values). In 1831 he laid out two blocks north of his original cabin site - this became Principal Street today - and named it "James K." Park Row subsequently became known as "Polk Place" after James K.'s son-in-law, General Andrew Johnson Polk Sr., who served as Governor of Missouri from 1865 to 1868 and then Ulysses S.
