Jefferson City, Missouri is a city in the U.S. state of Missouri. The population was 21,568 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Missouri and the largest city within the St. Louis metropolitan area. Jefferson City is part of the Kansas City–St. Joseph Combined Statistical Area and also part of the larger Midwestern United States region known as The Great Midwest. The site that would become Jefferson City was first settled by people who came from Kentucky in 1824 to look for land grants on which to build homes and start a new life after being displaced by events such as The Mexican War (1846-48). In 1854, General James Halleck named this place "Jefferson City" after President James K. Polk's decision to name all U.S.-Mexico border areas following The United States victory over Mexico in that year's war, which ended Mexican independence from Spain. But even though Missouri voters had given their approval for Polk to name what would become Jefferson City, he never ratified it because he believed that Kansas should be admitted into Confederation as a state before any names were given to cities in that territory—a view shared by many other leaders of the time including Abraham Lincoln and Franklin D. Roosevelt.[1] In 1867 when Territorial Governor John Ladd decided not to give up his power and recognize Kansas' admission into Union as a state despite strong pressure from pro-Kansas interests within his own government, he recommended giving this large unincorporated area east of downtown St Joseph County—containing most of present day Jefferson City—the nickname "The Great Midwest". After much debate among local officials over whether or not to adopt this proposal,[2] on February 26, 1867, members of the General Assembly voted 20-5 in favor of adopting "The Great Midwest".[3][4] This made Jefferson City one of only two cities in Missouri with official status as a city;[5] while St Joe County continued to be unincorporated rural land.[6][7][8] On May 1st 1865, when Union forces occupied much of eastern Missouri during The American Civil War,[9][10] Confederate guerrillas operating out of nearby White Sands Mountain began raiding Federal settlements there;[11][12], resulting in Union troops moving into town on September 15th 1865 under orders from Major General Sterling Price to take whatever property they could find without quarter or compensation (the raiders were later hunted down and killed).[13][14]). One result was an increased tax burden on residents living near Union lines;[15] another was an increase in trade between local businesses and those located along military supply routes available through Independence Mall just outside town limits (this period is sometimes referred to as "The Golden Age"of downtown Jeffco).[16][17]= In 1870 vigilante group called Society for Moral Reform began burning stores around town;[18], sparking further calls for tighter control over business practices by authorities concerned about possible social unrest potential caused by unchecked moral laxity among its membership? Aided by donations from well-wishers across country,[19],[20], Societies grew more organized throughout late 19th century but failed TO achieve political success until Grover Cleveland took office presidencyially during Reconstruction era

Jefferson City, Missouri is a city in eastern Missouri, United States. The population was 31,592 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jefferson County. The first permanent settler in what is now Jefferson City was James K. Polk who arrived there in 1815. The town was named after then-President James K. Polk and it was platted in 1825 by John Chouteau as part of a land grant to him from the US federal government. In 1827, the town became the territorial capital of Missouri when Kansas Territory was organized. It remained so until 1861 when Missouri seceded from the Union and became an independent country under President Abraham Lincoln's administration. During its days as a Territorial Capital, Jefferson City experienced heavy growth due to its strategic location near major transportation routes and river mouths that made it an appealing place for business and development opportunities. By 1860, however, most of the railroad construction had finished and new businesses were few and far between; nonetheless, local boosters kept up the momentum for more than two years before finally succumbing to economic stagnation during the American Civil War effort shortage caused byincoln's suspension of entire currency system which limited travel options for goods not essential to war production such as foodstuffs or munitions. In 1865–1867, Jeffco submitted plans for a new town site on his lands east of present day downtown Jefferson City Heights—amassing over 1 million petition signatures along with $8 million in public investment—to become America’s first municipal corporation governed by general election rather than appointment by state officials (the term “municipal corporation” would be adopted nationally within several years). On September 5th 1870 – just three months after he assumed office as Mayor – Jeffco applied to Congress for legislation establishing a Municipal Corporation Limit District outside KansasCity proper; this Request For Act (Sections 8 & 9) created what would eventually become home to more than one hundred municipalities across America including our own hometown! This plan led directly to today’s skyline: towering structures reminiscent of 19th century European architecture contrast against wide open streets perfect for walking or biking where SUVs are all but unheard Of! Just steps away from Central Park lies one block decked out like Versailles complete with grandiose marble staircases leading down into deep well designed gardens… One can only imagine what other amenities may soon be available if we allow this type of redevelopment!
