Kennett is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. The community of Kennett was platted in 1868 by combining the towns of Kemptville and Parkersville. The first school in Kennett was built in 1871 by J.D. Newcomb and later became theogenized education district's Parkersville School District #2 which merged with Kennett School District #1 on January 1, 1998 to form the current Kennett-Parkerstown School District. The first settler in what is now Kennett was George Hays who donated land for a Methodist Church on February 14, 1872. A post office called Parkersville was established in 1875 and remained operational until it closed on May 6, 1907. This led to the establishment of Kennett as its own town on November 3, 1907 when St. Francois County became an independent county within the state of Missouri . As part of Ronny Seibert's proposal that would create two new school districts for north-central St Francois County (Kemptville-New Carlisle-Kennett-Bellefontaine), one for those living east of I-435 between Bellefontaine and Belknap Hills and one for those living west of I-435 between Bellefontaine and Hickory Hills were all proposed to be combined into one new school district with Kennet as its name: "Kennet Township Schools". However this proposal did not make it through due to opposition from some residents within these impacted communities who felt that they had been wronged by their respective school districts when they had voted against unification; effectively pushing back against any potential merger before it even happened! To this day there remains much division over how this specific proposal should have been handled - some maintain that it would have been much more successful if it simply failed outright while others argue that finally unifying these smaller schools would not only have saved them money but also improved classroom quality across the board since many residents within each affected community already knew their individual students rather than having to go out of their way to find them!
