Kennett, Missouri is a small town in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,636 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The first settler in Kennett was David Fenton in 1837. The town was platted in 1839 and named for Colonel John Kennett (1785-1859), a veteran of the Mexican–American War who had served as colonel of militia under General Andrew Jackson and as postmaster at nearby Pella. The first school in Kennett was built on the site of what is now the library, which opened in 1841. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell moved his army from Cairo to Independence and besieged Kennett; its forces surrendered on November 11th following a three-day battle that resulted in 5 deaths and 21 wounded. A post office calledKennett was established at this location on December 12th, 1841, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on July 6th, 1906. The first store in Kennett was founded by Solomon Kittrell about 1800. In 1865 Union General Ulysses S Grant's army passed through the town during its campaign against General Sterling Price; Storekeep Richards provided flour for Grant's troops for their encampment near Pella. Kennett, Missouri is a town in Washington County, Missouri, United States. The population was 592 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The town was laid out in 1836 by John Kennett and named for him. The first settler in the area was Nicholas Jorgenson. A post office was established in 1839, and the name of the town changed from Jorgenson to Kennett in 1856. In 1861, a schoolhouse and other buildings were built in the town square; this building still stands today. In 1870, a gristmill was built on White River south of Kennett; this mill continued operations until it closed in 1930. A sawmill also operated near Kennett during this time period. In 1925, an electric power plant was constructed east of Kennett; this plant continues to operate today as Energy West Power Plant One. In 1940, George Sargent founded Southern Electric Company which provided electrical service to much of central Missouri including Kennett Valley Station north of Mansfield and parts of surrounding counties including Wallace and Doniphan.[1] Southern Electric Company merged with General Electric Company on November 1st 1946 to form GEICO.[2] There have been various expansions or replacements within GEICO over the years (most notably its acquisition by Comcast back in 2014)[3], but Kennedy has always maintained a presence within GEICO’s corporate family as one of its many wholly owned subsidiaries[4].
