Maryland Heights is a city in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 54,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area and is located just east of downtown Saint Louis on the north side of the Mississippi River. The name "Maryland Heights" was given to it by General James K. Polk in 1846 after he acquired land near its current location in what is now Union Station on the Illinois Central Railroad line. The first settler in Maryland Heights was David Auld who came from Scotland in 1786 and started a farm on what are now Maplewood Avenue and First Street. He named his property "Maryland Heights" after Queen Anne's County, British Empire then under Spanish rule as part of Mexico City Province (present-day Missouri). In 1814, Isaac Taylor moved from Lexington, Kentucky to establish a farm on land between Maplewood Avenue and Second Street that he called "Taylor's Grove". In 1821, John Sibley arrived from Maine and founded an lumber yard on what are now Third Street and East Market Place which became known as Sibley's Mill because it ran out of logs for shipbuilding during the American Civil War (1861-1865). In 1865, Cornelius Vanderbilt bought Taylor's Grove from Isaac Taylor for $10 per acre ($ ). In 1870, George Washington Carver purchased some adjacent land for $10 per acre ($ ) which became Carver Park later that year when it included parts of present-day Maryland Heights and Highland Park neighborhoods. After years of development within this limited parcel only three blocks wide with one block long center commercial strip developed by businessmen Jens Weidner (1911), Harry Wohlstand (1915), Alfred Rosenberg (1920) – all located just east of today's intersection of Maplewood Ave./First St./Union Station Rd., residents began to call their new community "Montgomery Heights." A group led by banker Edward Hirschman purchased most of the remaining original Carver Park parcel for $25 per acre ($ ) in 1922 which formed much larger Montclair neighborhood today west suburban than eastern Montgomery Heights - including large sections within present day Carrollton Manor subdivision as well as portions now within University Village redevelopment district south central SaintLouis Township bordering Lebanon Twp., Blue Springs Township eastward along I-64/I-435 corridor to meet with Ferguson Twp., Higgins Road southeastward past Independence Lake into Ferguson Township thence southwestward into Higgins Road Redevelopment District; these developments were announced at a meeting held December 12th 1921 at Masonic Temple ballroom where Hirschman was invited by Trustee Abraham Flexner who had been appointed receiver over trust assets following death or incapacity or resignation of Trustees Charles Fenton & Hiram Power; all properties were sold subject to mortgage backed securities being issued against them: note dated February 1st 1922 reads: An act to organize school districts . . . . . . . . This Act creating School District No 5 increases enrollment from 2274 pupils to 4673 pupils therein consisting chiefly Of white children resident On parcels above mentioned valued at $25 an acre resale price not less than $_ 25 upon each lot soldlot value should be paid unto said school board treasurer immediately before sale proceeds become liable To said treasurer For storage purposes until such time As money can be drawn upon From said Real Estate Sale Proceeds aforesaid... There are many things that make Maryland Heights, Missouri unique. It is one of the most diverse cities in Missouri, and its history shows that. The city was founded in 1837 by Presbyterians who arrived from Virginia. From its beginnings, Maryland Heights has been a center for education and commerce. In addition to its growing population, it has also seen growth in professional and cultural industries. Today, Maryland Heights is a thriving community with a rich culture and history that can be enjoyed by everyone who visits it.
The first white settlers in Missouri arrived in the area that is now Maryland Heights, in 1803. The area was part of the Shawnee Nation and the first European to set foot on the present-day land was Frenchman Jean Baptiste Point du Sable. He named it "Missouri" after his home country, France. In 1836, a group of Englishmen led by Captain John Smith established a ranch here. They called themselves "The Henskins." By 1839, some 30 American families had moved into what is now Maryland Heights from various parts of Missouri. Many of these early settlers were farmers who grew corn and other crops and raised livestock. Others built homes or started businesses in this rapidly growing community. In 1861, when Kansas became an independent state, much of northwestern Missouri was annexed by Kansas. This left Maryland Heights as part of Missouri's only Indian Territory. However, this did not mean that Indians were completely unwelcome in this community; many Indians lived here until they were eventually forced out by federal troops during the Indian Wars (1865-1867). The town's population boomed during this time as people came to live near their jobs in Kansas City and St Louis County (now MO). In 1911, when Union Pacific Railway extended its tracks through what is now MD Heights, it also began construction on a new line running parallel to US-31/IL-340 which would connect STL with KC via Forneyville and Overland Park (later Kansas City), making MD Heights one of the most important cities on the network. At this time there were over 100 residents living in what is now MD Heights - more than any other city on PRR tracks! On July 1st 1916, World War I began with America's entry into war against Germany along with Austria-Hungary. The impact upon MdHsiens was significant; not only did residents have to find ways to get food and supplies to their homes but also work took priority over home life while menfolk went off to fight abroad. In 1917 there was yet another blow when President Wilson ordered all American soldiers must be turned back at frontier posts! That put even more pressure upon households trying provide for loved ones overseas without having them taken away from them entirely! Despite all these challenges though, many MdHians refused to give up their way of life just because things had changed; instead they embraced change as something that made their world a little bit better...and maybe even slightly safer too!
