St. Charles, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of central Missouri. The population was 1,829 at the 2000 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1836 by fur trappers and missionaries, and named after Saint Charles Borromeo, an Italian Jesuit missionary who had died in 1755. It grew rapidly during the 19th century as a result of its strategic location at the junction of several wagon roads that connected Kansas City with other parts of Missouri and Illinois. In 1868, St. Charles became a city and retains this designation to this day. In 1960, St. Charles merged with neighboring towns Ballwin and Lenoir to form what is now known as The Ozarks Urban Districts Micropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). This MSA has a combined population of over 100,000 people and covers all or portions of six counties: Butler, Clinton, Douglas, Johnson County;Jefferson County; Ray county; Stark County; and Williamson County. St. Charles, Missouri is a small town in the eastern United States of America. The population was 3,851 at the 2010 census and it is the county seat of St. Charles County. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now St. Charles County was French explorer Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne on his trip through present day Missouri in 1763. Le Moyne named this area for General James Robertson, who had commanded British forces during the American Revolution and helped secure independence from Great Britain. General Robertson's family owned land in what became St.Charles County and he donated some of that land to the government as its county seat in 1821. In 1836, whenMissouri became a state, St.Charles County joined with other southeastern counties to form Lawrence County (named for then-Governor Franklin D’Alembert). This move increased political power within Lawrence County and led to several building projects there such as an courthouse and jail which were completed between 1837 and 1840 by contractor Daniel Guyenne (seeGuyenne Building). When Kansas City was founded in 1865, much of SaintCharles' downtown business district lay vacant because most of the city's founders were drawn to Topeka where they started their businesses or moved afterKansas City became a state in 1861. However, Topeka rapidly gentrified over time so many entrepreneurs left SaintCharles behind and many stores closed down or converted into housing developments while others continued operations but changed ownership or renamed themselves after other cities or states near them such as Wichita Falls ( Texas) or Des Moines (Iowa). The last store on Main Street west of Interstate 70 closed down on September 24th, 1984 just days before Kansascity opened its new headquarters complex across I-70 from that same storefront which still contains remnant evidence from its previous tenant--a Sears Roebuck department store--including door handles made out of cast iron! A large manhole cover from one period Store front also remains today at 4221 S Poplar Drive; Curiously enough this address corresponds exactly with one corner lot currently occupied by L&L Development LLC., a real estate development company formed about 1990 which purchased adjacent property adjoining 4221 SPoplar Drive formerly occupied by Sears... [This] may be another clue that something interesting happened at 4221 SPoplar Drive back then :-)
