Town And Country, Missouri is a small town in Jefferson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,401 at the 2010 census. It is the home of Truman State University and the smaller villages of Brookhaven and rural New Market. The village of Brookhaven was founded by General James Wilkinson in 1853 as a stop on his journey from St. Louis to Springfield, Missouri. He named it after his brother-in-law's estate in England (Brookhaven Park). When he reached Springfield he found that his brother-in-law had sold all the land around Brookhaven so that it could be developed into a town. The first store opened in 1858 and by 1860 there were 12 stores and a post office inBrookhaven Village. In 1861 Wilkinson built a grist mill which became the first large machine shop west of the Mississippi River. The village had two churches by 1870: First Baptist Church and then Methodist Episcopal Church (now called First Presbyterian Church).
