The first courthouse in Troy was built in 1830. In 1839, the state of Missouri granted a charter to the National Bank of Missouri. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Troy sided with Confederate States of America and unsuccessfully fought against Union forces. After the war, many businesses closed due to competition from nearby cities such as Springfield and St Louis. However, several large companies continued to operate in Troy until around 1990.
