Troy, Missouri was founded by theMissouri Valley Railroad in 1871. The town was named for the French general and explorer Pierre- Charles de Troy. The railroad built a depot in Troy in 1872, and the town began growing rapidly. By 1886, Troy had a population of over 10,000 people. The town experienced several changes during its early years. In 1872, it became part of Webster County; however, in 1896 it became independent again. From 1908 to 1912, Troy also gained city status; this distinction may have been due to its high population levels at that time or to its location on the Mississippi River floodplain. In 1914, Troy merged with neighboring Hill City to form one large city. This merger allowed for more growth and development within the city limits; as a result, Troy attained even greater heights during its early years as an independent municipality. During World War II, the town became an important manufacturing center due to its proximity to military bases throughout central Missouri. After the war ended in 1945, though many factories closed down due to economic decline, Troy continued to grow steadily throughthe late 1940s and into the 1950s thanks largely to new housing developments and other economic initiatives spearheaded by Mayor John Pritchard (1948-1975). Today, much of what made downtown so vibrant during those earlier decades has long disappeared; however, portions of historic buildings still stand testament to what once were some of America's most thriving cities – including much of downtown's original business district which is now home to numerous restaurants and nightlife options

Troy is a city in Saint Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,651 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1837 by Captain James Ewing and his family who named it for Troy, New York.
