Fresh roasted coffee has been a part of Washington, MO for generations. In the early 1800s, brick-and-mortar roasters began to proliferate in the city. The first known roaster in Washington was Jeremiah Dixon’s Coffee House on Fourth Street. In 1821, John Taylor opened his own coffee house on Seventh Street in downtown Washington. He served roasties and other beverages from a large pot on the front porch. By 1865, there were six roasters operating inWashington: four by Jeremiah Dixon and two by John Taylor. Theodore Roosevelt visited Washington, MO in 1912 and 1913 and enjoyed a cup of fresh roasted coffee at the old Grosvenor Hotel on Main Street.Roosevelt is credited with introducing fresh roasted coffee to America. During World War I, Wilson ordered 1 acre of land be put into production of fresh roasted beans for use in soldiers’ rations. This jump start to the industry may have saved hundreds of jobs during wartime when mills closed down due to lack of output
Fresh roasted coffee beans are a perfect way to enjoy the taste of premium coffee. Roasted in small batches, these beans are hand-selected and carefully prepped to ensure their quality. The process of roasting coffee begins with the removal of the stems and some of the fine grounds. The beans then go through a complex process of wet-processing, which removes all water soluble substances before being ground into a finer particle size. Finally, drying takes place to remove any moisture that may have been present during the wet processing. After each step, the coffee is exposed to air and sun for a period of time known as “tamping” or “ pressing”. This will cause mostafa oil and other oils toolidates (a by-product of wet processing) while breaking down any cellulose fibers that may be present in the bean matrix. Finally, after tampming, it is ready for brewing.

By 1815, nearly all European countries had some form of roast or ground coffee trade with Native Americans

Aftermath of this event led to reductions in government spending and job loss for many residents of Washington. This community has since regained some of its former prosperity through tourism and other businesses.
