The Missoula Army National Guard has been providing service to our community for over ninety years. During that time, the Guard has donated many items and services to the community. From rifles, pistols, and other firearms to uniforms and equipment, the Guard has always been there to help SUPPORT OUR CITIZENS! One of the most popular donations made by the Missoula Army National Guard is their annual Christmas gift campaign. This year’s campaign features a variety of unique gifts for all types of military personnel including soldiers, officers, marines, airmen and Coast Guardsmen. From cookware and kitchen supplies to books on duty life or just general holiday fun, there is something for everyone in this year’s gift offering! The Missoula Army National Guard is one of the most decorated units in the United States military. The unit has received numerous awards and decorations, including four Distinguished Unit Citations, two Presidential Unit Citation's, two Silver Star Medals, and three Purple Hearts.
Missoula, Montana is located in the Rocky Mountains of Western North America. The city was founded in 1867 by a group of settlers led by John McLaughlin. At its peak, Missoula had a population of over 100,000 people and was one of the most important cities in the West. However, since the late 1800s, Missoula has experienced significant decline due to factors such as low population growth and falling prices for goods and services. In recent years, however, Missoula has made some strides to revive its economy and become an important cultural center in the region. The history of Missoula began with a small community called Massacre Creek. Located on the banks of the Missouri River, Massacre Creek consisted of about twenty-six dwellings and two stores. The first white settler to arrive in what is now Missoula was John McLaughlin who arrived in 1867. Mr. McLaughlin built his home at present day 5th Street and Main Street near where he operated his farm until 1870 when he erected a log cabin known as “The Little White House” on land that now houses the City Hall building. Although there were no permanent settlements established near Missoula until after 1871, initial efforts were made to establish trade routes through this area by fur traders based out of Fort Benton (now Aberdeen). In 1872 Cedar Rapids businessmen James Wohlwetter and George Stephenson organized a wagon train from Minnesota carrying supplies for General Custer during his ill-fated march across North Dakota into Indian Territory under orders from President Ulysses S Grant. On arriving at Battle Mountain Camp on July 24th they found that all their supplies had been consumed by Indians living around camp including 800 head of cattle which they cornered within five miles of camp without any relief being offered them or intelligence being received concerning their situation1 In 1875 Jens Bjerregård discovered gold along Buffalo Bayou south of town2; later renamed Gold Butte3 it became evident that this claim was not associated with any gold vein but rather an abandoned military post used for storage purposes in 1862 by Colonel Pembina7; however further exploration failed to find payable gold interests so it remained unsold until 1888 when prospectors Dolph Lundgren8and Harry Mudge9 discovered rich seams totaling 2 million ounces grading Au 6 g/t10 . With this valuable information new opportunities opened up for miners including those working from Steele Gulch northward11 culminating with Henry Deasy’s discovery in 1902 worth $5 million12 . Although initially discouraged because it would not be possible to produce enough gold to justify investment interest decisions were madeto open new mines especially given today’s global marketplace where metal prices are highly volatile13 . It should be noted that these early successes did not lead directly to increased production but rather helped spur technological advances which eventually led to increased mine output14 Missoula rapidly grew into one of America’s leading mining towns; becoming known as “the Granite Capital Of The World”15 and hosting annual banking exhibitions16 Amongst other things19: numerous symphonies were written here including Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony18 ; films such as Eastwood’s Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap were shot here20 ; baseball great Lou Gehrig played his last game here21 ; Businessman Jay Cooke founded Cooke & Co22 which still operates today23; local resident Roy Blount won both legs (of the Triple Crown) at horse racing's biggest event ever – Philadelphia Phillippian Stakes – held at Laurel Park Race Course24; heavy rains causedflash flooding throughout downtown missouri25 followed by weeks long mudslides26 resulting in more than $100 million worth damage27 .
