Bellevue, Nebraska is a city in Douglas County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 21,812 at the 2010 census. Bellevue is the county seat of Douglas County. It lies on the Missouri River and includes much of the eastern edge of Omaha metropolitan area. The original town site was laid out by Captain James Fenton in 1853 as a trading post on the site of what is now Bellevue Square. Bellevue was named after George Washington's homestate, Virginia. The first town meeting held in Bellevue was on April 10, 1853, to consider whether or not to name the new community after General Washington. A majority of residents voted to name it Bellevue and it became an official town site on July 1, 1854. On December 3rd, 1860 – just one year after its incorporation – Bellevue had its first election and chosen a board of trustees for local government under the heading "The First Municipality". In 1862-1863 during the American Civil War (the war for independence from Great Britain), BellevUE served as an encampment for Union military forces along the banks of the Missouri River near Springfield, Illinois due to Confederate efforts to send troops eastward into Kansas City Territory (later Omaha) without surrendering their arms or supplies. On November 5th 1912 US Senator Charles Sumner delivered his famed speech Midvale when he denounced discrimination against Mormons living in Utah while making reference to "a small but respectable village called Midvale", which Sumner himself had recently visited at that time and found quite unappealing (). AdditionallyMidvale was also mentioned by then Mayor Edwin Sanger who said: "I should like very much to see Midvale Improved; I find nothing there that I want." Sumner's attack on Mormon prejudice incensed many members of his own party who were vociferously opposed to any form of religious discrimination (), which led him eventuallydrop support for early homogeneous zoning ordinances prevalent throughout most major U.S cities () One result may have been that more Mormons decided not to move into Midvale following this public rebuke than actually moved there; however some other community members moved into Midvale anyway because they felt they couldNOT live anywhere else in Omaha without risking prosecution (). After moving back home from Utah midwinter 1917-1918 he described his experience living in Utah as follows: "It would be hard work tryingto get around anything here". However Sumner continued being mayor until 1933 when he resigned due to charges brought against him by Ulysses S Grant officewith whom he feuded over patronage decisions (). As president pro temporeof Nebo County from 1907 through 1913 Sumner spearheaded efforts including legislation providing free milk unto female farmworkers (), which helped revive Omaha's agricultural economy during these years (). Despite his accomplishments as mayor stagehands often characterized him as "a man with no sense of humor" () later jokes about sumner's supposed ignorance surfaced online starting with this joke: If you want something done call Charles Sumner(), but if you don't know how To do it - ask Dick Cheney () . At age 72 years old Mr Norquist announced plans for a $10 million dollar parkette adjacentto Main Street across from City Hall inside historic district boundaries established by voters two years earlier () On May 15th 2017 Norquist died suddenly at his home surrounded by family

The town's economy is based on agriculture, which includes corn farming, hayseed production, buffalo hunting/gathering, and other livestock husbandry activities; it also engages in manufacturing services such as printing and apparel sales. The mainstay of the town's local economy has been reliance on transportation: water transport brings goods into town from surrounding farms while Interstate 80 provides access to jobs in Omaha and other cities south of Bellevue.
