Bellevue, Nebraska is a city in Douglas County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 14,849 at the 2010 census. Bellevue is the county seat of Douglas County and part of the Omaha–Council Bluffs–Bellevue metropolitan area. Bellevue is one of three cities in the Omaha-Council Bluffs-Hawkeye City Combined Statistical Area; the others are Omaha and Lincoln. Bellevue was founded by Swedish immigrants in 1881 as a small town on the banks of the Missouri River. It grew rapidly due to its location near railroad tracks and its access to cheap farmland for farming. The city's growth accelerated after World War II when it became an important local manufacturing center for aircraft parts, automotive products, plastics and other manufacturing goods. In recent years Bellevue has become more popular for recreational activities such as swimming, fishing and playing golf than for economic reasons because of competition from neighboring towns such as Kearney and Fremont. The city's name comes from two accounts of its founding: One suggests that an early settler named Bellevue named his farm after a place called Belleville in France; another says that General George Armstrong Custer visited Bellevue while on his way to fight what he thought were Indian hostilities near Fort Robinson on October 12, 1876, and saw "a great many houses" there with names like "Chesterfield," "Hillsborough," etc., which led him to believe that this was indeed a French village (the first American settlement west of Mexico). He ordered all present to leave because he found them living in poverty without any proper buildings or defenses against attack by Indians (henceforth known as Armstrong's Raid). One reason why Bellevue sprang up so quickly after Custer's visit was that most Americans at that time did not understand how far eastward Sweden had spread since they last sighted it under King Gustavus Adolphus nine years earlier during their Mexican Expedition. So although Swedes had been living in Nebraska Territory since 1846 (when it was organized), few people realized this until Custer's visit when prices for land soared because so much new territory had been annexed into America during those days due to war exhaustion following Mexican Christmases. In addition some Scandinavian families who immigrated prior to 1880 also got caught up in this immigration wave because they could afford it given increased opportunities available after America won her independence from Great Britain via the Treaty of Ghent which ended WWI Thanks to these factors along with good relations between both nations following WWI – thanks largely to President Woodrow Wilson's efforts – many Scandinavians stayed behind despite offers by their countrieside friends back hometo move away before things got too hot – including some high-ranking Swedish military officials who decided against returning home altogether preferring instead opportunities opening up within newly independent America ."
