In 1854, they purchased 2,000 acres of land east of Omaha from a group of local Sioux people for $10 per acre. The Fremont brothers began to build a small town on their new property, which became known as Columbus. In 1915, Columbus was incorporated as a city and soon became known as one of the most important cities in Nebraska because of its role in society and its economy. The history of the United States Air Force is a long and proud one. It was founded on September 11, 1947, when the USAF was created as a result of the National Security Act of 1947. The act granted the USAF permanent independence from the US Department of War and set up a structure that would provide air power for American defense. One of the first tasks of the USAF was to create an inventory of weapons and equipment needed for its operations. This inventory has since been revised and updated numerous times, most notably in 1996 when Operation Desert Storm took place. In 1951, President Harry S Truman authorized development of strategic bombers which would become known as “the Strategic Air Command” or “SAC”. By 1957, SAC had acquired over 20%of all USAF bomber capability making it one of America’s leadingrocket forces. On July 15th 1961, President John F Kennedy signed Executive Order 13536 which made manned space exploration a major goal for America. This order allowed NASA to begin planning for human spaceflight as part of their overall mission to expand American influence in space. Beginning with Project Mercury in 1958, NASA sent humans into orbit around Earth on rockets built by Boeing and other companies. With each successful launch cycle - beginning with Mercury 7 on January 8th 1959 - humanity became closer to reaching spacefaring reliability and capability. By 1969, only two launches were required per year to reach orbit; this number increased significantly during the Apollo era due to advances in technology and spacecraft design culminating in Neil Armstrong’s first walk on Moon on July 20th 1969! From 1969-1972 there were four missions per year (and three after that), but then things started slow again until 1986 when you had six launches per year! These days we enjoy twelve launches per calendar year!

In 1502, Columbus made another journey to America. He landed on an island near Miami and explored it for a while before returning home with valuable spices. The United States was founded by American Indians in 1812, but Columbus's legacy is still remembered today because of his discoveries.
Columbus, Nebraska is the most recent town to be founded in the area now known as Nebraska. The first residents of what is now Columbus were Native American people who were living near the present-day city of Omaha. In 1871, a group of men from Iowa named George Armstrong Custer and Major James A. Logan decided to make their way to Nebraska and establish a trading post on the Platte River. They arrived at what is now Columbus on July 4th, 1871, and began construction on their Post Office building which still stands today. The first store opened in Columbus on October 12th, 1871. The town was incorporated on January 3rd, 1902.
