The Fremont Army Reserve, or AR, was established in 1912 as an auxiliary force to the Nebraska National Guard. The unit was mobilized for World War I and re-established in 1917 as an infantry regiment. The regiment served in France and Belgium before being disbanded in 1919. In 1942, the Fremont Army Reserve was reactivated as a service branch of the Nebraska National Guard and redesignated the 1st Infantry Regiment. The regiment served in World War II until it was disbanded on August 15, 1945. Beginning with the 9/11 terrorist attacks, military forces were deployed to New York City and Washington D.C.. In response to these deployments, Congress passed the Military Readiness Review Act of 2002 which directed President George W. Bush to create a Department of DefenseMilitary Readiness Board (MRB) to review all U.S. military preparedness plans and identify any gaps that needed to be closed. On October 25th,2002 MRB issued its report titled "A Guide for Enhancing American Military Preparedness." Fremont is located on the Omaha-Council Bluffs railroad and on the east side of the Platte River. It lies about south of Omaha. Fremont has a humid continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Nebraska were French traders in 1672, who named this area "Fremont." A post office was established at Fremont in 1854, and it became a town on July 1, 1860. The name may be derived from one or more local Native American words meaning "forty miles wide by thirty miles long," which would fit well into the platte river valley where Fremont stands. In 1868 another post office was established at Westport because that was where Fort Bridger had been built some years earlier as part of general United States military efforts to control Indian land west of Missouri River. In 1861 Union General Don Carlos Buell destroyed the key fort at Fort Bridger north of Omaha while besieging that city during his campaign against Confederate General Robert E. Lee; this event helped spur development around that fortification over time and led to today's downtown area being named for Buell (Bridger Place). After federal troops burned down much of Omaha in 1865 during the American Civil War, many farmers abandoned their homes near Fort Bridger for new settlements farther away from combat areas; this move also helped contribute to today's downtown area having an open-air shopping district as its centerpiece. In 1875 two sawmills were erected along Des Moines Street within sight of present-day downtown; these mills continued production until 1980 when they were replaced by a larger mill complex known astheDesMoines Ring Road Mills Complex". The older sawmills are still extant and can be seen from Main Street eastward across Central Avenue towards Downtown; they are currently under restoration by Heritage Landmark Restoration Associates Incorporated.). On December 12, 1889, Frémont married Emma Fillmore Hawley (1851-1939), daughter of Senator James Millington Hawley (1811-1880) and his wife Lucy Fenton Morse (1820-1900). On May 8, 1907 President Theodore Roosevelt pronounced Fremont "the most beautiful place I have ever seen" when he visited there for an agricultural fair hosted by Governor Charles Evans Hughes at Hughes Park adjacent to Westport High School (). Mrs. Roosevelt later told interviewer Alice Paul she found her husband attractive and admired his strong character traits although she did not think he could manage government affairs successfully (). As a result of this migration, many people settled down in Omaha around these same times – including some who later became famous figures such as Warren G Harding and Dwight Eisenhower – providing valuable cultural connections between both cities over the years!
