Fremont, Nebraska is a small town in the state of Nebraska. The population was 1,623 at the 2010 census. It is located in Fremont County. The name Fremont is derived from the Ojibwe word for "west" and "-on," which means "place of." The first settlers in what would become Fremont arrived on July 20, 1855, when three men named John Prentice, James Floyd and George Haggerty traveled west from Council Bluffs to find land that they could purchase. They were not successful in finding any good land to purchase so they returned to Iowa the next year. On August 2, 1857, Augustus Noble Stoddard bought 640 acres (2 km²) of land east of present-day Fremont from Solomonolidad Carver for $1 per acre ($/ha). On February 12, 1860 a group of twenty-seven farmers met at the home of Methodist preacher Drury Witherspoon near Dayton to form the Midwest State Bank Limited Company with a view to opening up new business opportunities in Missouri Territory. The bank opened its doors on April 26th and became one of the early successes of Omaha. In 1861 Fremont became part of newly formed Territorial Kansas Territory and on November 16th it voted 3-to-1 to secede from Nebraska when territorial delegates convened at Topeka to ratify Kansas’s admission into the Union as an independent country. In 1863 John Gifford donated 100 acres (40 ha) southeast of downtown Fremont for a public library which was built in 1865 by JB Stevens & Sons lumberyard employees under contract with Omaha Public Library Board. The original building still stands today: it was used as an elementary school until 2002 before being renovated as a museum celebrating local history and culture called “Fremont History Museum” which opened its doors on October 22nd, 2014 adjacent to newest development called “Crossroads Plaza” across Old Main Street from downtown where former First Congregational Church once stood Fremont experienced rapid growth following Kansas’s admission into the Union as an independent country; businesses such as A&P grocery store founder Garnett Butler's wagon shop were established along North Main Street while other businesses quickly cropped up such as Witherspoon's Methodist church that served locals and travelers alike until it burned down around 1915 .
