Fremont is a town in Kearney County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,596 at the 2010 census. Fremont is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs, NE Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Fremont was Capt. James Cook on November 17, 1774, who mapped out what would become Kearney County and named it for John Frémont (1769-1843), an American Revolutionary War hero and surveyor who had been killed in battle near Monterey in 1804. Fremont was platted on December 7, 1868 by J.P. Morgan and others as the townsite of "Fremont." The Pony Express route ran through Fremont from Council Bluffs to Omaha via the Missouri River valley in this time period; one rider reported that he "saw no other house than a barn or two" while traveling through the town center on his way to Omaha. A post office called "Fremont" was established in 1870; it remained in operation until 1907. In 1901–1902 a new dam was built along the Missouri River at Fremont; this helped increase irrigation water availability for farmers in central Nebraska and also created some flood control opportunities for the town which had grown up around it since its founding days as a small Mormon colony about 20 miles north of Des Moines City Limits – today’s Omaha metropolitan area. The Fremont Waterworks were founded by local residents Arthur Osmond and Harry Wirthman in 1913 after they bought an old sawmill used for power generation from Consolidated Edison Company founder Samuel Gompers Sr.. The company still produces electricity from Sawmills Dam No., 2 near present-day Fremont which includes generator sets 364 megawatts (MW) each with a combined output of 536 MW! Today's city limits extend into parts of Osborne County east of I-80 where once there were several farms and ranches located before Interstate 80 cut them off from downtown Kansas City proper; however much like today’s city limits these boundaries have changed very little over time due to growth within our borders but annexation by other cities or counties such as Neosho & Shawnee Counties! Today's downtown district contains many large businesses including Macy's Department Store being one such store which opened its doors nearly 120 years ago! Downtown has seen some redevelopment over recent years with new apartments being built as well as several blocks away across Ritchie Highway known locally as “The District” containing major retailers including Sears & Kmart along with movie theaters plus professional sports venues like FirstEnergy Stadium which seats over 60,000 people!
