Grand Island is a town in Johnson County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha–Council Bluffs metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Grand Island was John Paddock in 1854. A post office called Paddock was established in 1857, and remained in operation until 1861. The original town site was on the east bank of the Missouri River, about four miles (6 km) north of its present location. In 1871, a group of settlers led by Jacob Howells moved to what is now Grand Island from Council Bluffs, Iowa; they named it after their hometown of Kingston, Ontario, Canada. At that time there were only two buildings on the entire settlement: a log cabin used as a store and schoolhouse; and an old Methodist church built by Reverend Purdy in 1872 which still stands today. In 1902, when Nebraska became a state, Grand Island became one of its first townships; it remains so today. The primary industry during this time was agriculture with some light manufacturing also taking place; however, since World War II has been dominated by tourism as many people visit the small agricultural community for its beautiful scenery and history

Grand Island, Nebraska is a small town located in the Ozarks region of Kansas. The population was 5,269 at the 2010 census. Grand Island is part of the Topeka-Anadarko metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1854 by John C. Fremont and his family as a trading post on the Great Miami River. In 1907, Grand Island became an incorporated Town after a referendum approved by voters. In 1951, the name of the town was changed to honor General George Armstrong Custer during World War I as Custer Battlefield National Monument. The monument is located on Main Street in downtown Grand Island. The town also has a museum which tells the history of the community and its people. The first settlers to live on Grand Island were refugees from Missouri who had fled for safety during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). These refugees were followed by other families who began arriving in 1854 when Fort Leavenworth was established on Grand Island as general land grant for military veterans from Kansas and Missouri who had fought in that war or been wounded there. By 1860, there were 100 residents living on Grand Isle with six stores, three churches and one school. A jail was built in 1861 but it was destroyed by fire in 1865 while being used as a storehouse for troops quartered at Fort Donelson near Wichita Falls, Texas Territory (now Wichita County, Kansas). In 1864, local farmers formed what would become known as "The Farmer's Alliance" to resist new obstacles put forward by territorial government officials seeking to restrict farming activities within central Kansas Territory limits including increases in transportation rates and restrictions on how much land could be allocated for agriculture within any given Census Year This alliance would later become known asthe Union League Club which helped lead to statehood for Kansas As early as 1870s most of present day rural areas east of Interstate 40 had been settled with few exceptions consisting mostly of small hamlets clustered along streams or around river mouths It wasn't until about 1900 when farmers began developing large tracts of farmland east of Interstate 40 becoming what are now known as eastern side farms that irrigation systems became important
The first settlers on the Nebraska Territory were American Loyalists who fled to the area following the American Revolution. The land was granted to Congress in 1846, and by 1850, there were only a handful of families living in what is now Nebraska. In 1861, when Kansas was admitted as a United States state, Nebraska became part of that state. The railroad arrived in 1865 and helped spur development in the territory. By 1870, there were over 10,000 people living in Nebraska and it was named for President Abraham Lincoln.
