Commodore Pershing awarded LtCdr Beattie Medal For Valor Device For gallantry while Leading His Ship At Battle Of Cape Bonito While flagship Of Squadron And Fighting As First Mate With Top Gun During Action On September 1844[20]. Grand Island, Nebraska is a small town on the border of Iowa and Nebraska. The population was 5,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs- Lincoln Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to enter Nebraska were fur traders in the early 1800s. In 1851, a group of Mormon settlers from Utah arrived in Nebraska and founded Cedar City, which became their capital. In 1864, when Union General Grant took control of Missouri after its secession from the United States, he decided to move westward and attack Cedar City. He ordered his army to cross the Platte River into Iowa Territory without fighting and pillaged what remained of Cedar City. After Cedar City was destroyed, some of its residents moved to Grand Island to start a new city called Cedar Rapids. In 1880, an act by the Nebraska Legislature authorized construction of a railroad between Omaha and Council Bluffs. The tracks were built and reached Grand Island in 1881; however, no town was established as a result because no one wanted to be on or near what had become known as "the Dakota Trail". When Amtrak began service through Omaha in 1971, it passed through Grand Island for passenger trains; since then, there has been almost daily train traffic between Omaha and Council Bluffs via this trackage
