Hastings, Nebraska is a small town in the Great Plains region of Nebraska. The population was 5,473 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs-West Des Moines, IA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Hastings were American Indians who hunted and gathered game near the present day railroad tracks. The area now known as Hastings was first settled by European Americans in 1854 when they arrived from Illinois to purchase land along the Republican River. They named their new town Hastings after General John A. Hastings, who had helped lead Union forces in the Battle of Gettysburg. The original community was located on the east side of what is now Main Street and consisted of about 100 homes. In 1871, when a section of Ulysses S Grant's estate was purchased by Jno Cushman, Jr., he started development on what is now downtown Hastings with help from his father and brother-in-law, George Hoadley Cushman. By 1875, most of downtown had been built and Hastings became an important commercial center for central Nebraska. In 1902, construction began on what would become Lincoln Park which included modern streets and public buildings including a library and post office. When Lincoln Park opened it became one of the largest parks in America with over 1 million square feet (100 hectares). In 1916, during World War I, some residents decided to move away from civilian life and join up with Army units fighting in Europe as soldiers or sailors. Over 4,000 men from Hastings served in various wars including France; Belgium; Italy; Russia;the United States Navy during World War I . On January 15th 1920 Harry Bemis organized a meeting at his house to discuss forming a town organization for Hastings that would manage all aspects of city government such as street cleaning etcetera
