The history of the navy in Hastings, Nebraska can be traced back to 1859. At that time, the Omaha and Santa Fe Railroad was completed and began serving Hastings. The railroad allowed goods to be transported quickly and efficiently from Omaha to Marshall, Nebraska. This new transportation system also helped spur businesses in Hastings to begin developing. One of the earliest businesses in Hastings was a grocery store. In 1865, the first post office was established in town. By 1870, there were four stores in town and over 100 residents. In 1875, a bank was opened in town and soon thereafter, a cotton gin was built as well. That same year saw the opening of the first school in Hastings—an elementary school called Central School which served children from kindergarten through grade 8. In 1898, the first college degree program for military officers was started at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. The program eventually became known as US Naval Academy College of Law after it relocated to Annapolis, Maryland during World War II. After World War II ended, Drake University ceased operation and all its students transferred to US Naval Academy College of Law at Annapolis which then became known as US Naval Academy Hastings School of Law. From 1959-1969, Navy Cadets graduated from NAGSHSL with their Bachelor’s degrees while still attending UNAH until they attain theirailship commissioning into service (USN). Today, NAGSHSL offers an undergraduate degree program as well as graduate degrees including law (BBA), business administration (MBA), information technology (IT), international relations (IR) and maritime law (JD). As one of America’s leading naval academies located here on Nebraska’s east coast shoreline since 1899-2018 it is no wonder that NAGSHSL has been able to offer graduates access to highly respected positions within our nation’s Armed Forces both ashore or afloat including enlistment into active duty allowances corps such as United States Coast Guard or United States Marines; leadership roles such as Superintendent/Chief Petty Officer; command posts such Commander Destroyer Group 2 Pacific Fleet or Commodore First Sea Lord; task forces composed wholly or almost entirely of sea-going assets including Carrier Strike Group 5 Tenth Fleet; amphibious warfare units consisting primarily infantry units embarked on landing craft; airfields capable either for training purposes only or operational use by Fighter Wing 1 Air Defense Command which is headquartered at RAF Mildenhall England under control of Commander Air Task Force Europe

Hastings, Nebraska is a town in Kearney County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 896 at the 2010 census. Hastings is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs, NE Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hastings was founded as an agricultural community in 1868 by Reuben Hayward and others and named after General George A. Custer, who died in 1876 during the Black Hills War. Hastings became a city on July 1, 1984. Hastings was incorporated as a city on July 1, 1984 following passage of Initiative No. 4 from the citizens of Hastings through a referendum vote taking place on November 5th of that year. The initiative allows for cities to exist within their county boundaries without having to go through a process of incorporation; this eliminated any chance for annexation by neighboring towns or counties. The first mayor of Hastings was Harry Dickey with service beginning on October 1st, 1985 and ending on May 15th of that year; he was succeeded by his wife Jane Dickey upon her death in 1996. In 2006 Mayor Donny Hall stepped down after being indicted for bribery charges brought against him by the Omaha district attorney's office; he had been accused of paying $100 per hour to two prostitutes over five years in order to get them pregnant and keep them from going public with their allegations against him while he served as mayor

In 2013, Hastings voters approved a $30 million bond issue to improve infrastructure including new schools and fire stations as well as provide funding for city services such as streetlights and policing. The funds were used to pay off bonds dating back to the 1920s which had been issued to finance various projects such as widening of Main Street and new sidewalks across town. The largest component ofthe project is a renovation of Main Street which will add resurfaced lanes widthwise from two feet wide at one end all the way down to one foot at the other end giving more space for cars while also improving drainage system functionality
