Kearney is a town in Kearney County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 581 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha–Council Bluffs Metropolitan Statistical Area. Kearney was founded in 1875 by brothers Elias and Cyrus Kearney and named for their father, John A. Kearney. The original settlers were men from Illinois and Iowa who came overland through Nebraska on horseback. They built log cabins, hunted game, and raised crops until they could afford to build better homes. In 1878, Elias Kearney organized a Methodist church in the town which soon became a center for religious activity in the area. In 1902, he donated land to the school district which would later become the Kearney Community School District. In 1900-1901, two members of Congress visited Kearney while on their way to visit some other townships in Nebraska before returning home via Burlington Route 20 (now Interstate 80). While they were there they noticed that there were no churches or schools in Kearny so they decided to start one there and named it after them – John A. Kearny Elementary School now known as ELKS Middle School (). The first teacher was Mrs. Mary Kappenrider who taught 3rd grade until 1928; she then moved up to 4th grade where she taught until her retirement in 1951 In 1916-1917 an American Expeditionary Force under General George Custer went through Nebraska during World War I and experienced many challenges including running into Indian Territory (present day Kansas) on their way back from battle near Fort Hays The town has also been mentioned as being birthplace of country music legend Willie Nelson
