The first batch of Dutch beans were roasted here in 1871. In 1916, the Kearney Coffee company was founded with a small farmstead near the present site of Kearney City Hall. By 1954, Kearney had become one of America's leading coffee producers. The company continued to operate until it merged with Peet's Coffee in 1986. Today, Kearney is home to four major coffee companies: Starbucks, Dunkin' Donuts, Peet's Coffee Company andmissionary K-Cup Programaranco. As an Ancient Greek city located on the Great Salt Lake (now Lake Winnipesaukee), Kearney has long been associated with agriculture and trade as well as coffee production and consumption. The first European settlers to arrive in what is now Nebraska arrived in 1670 aboard the Mayflower set sail from Plymouth Plantation for North America. Kearney is located in the bottom of Nebraska and it's a small town. It has been around since 1853, when two Mormon families moved there from Utah. The Kearney post office was established in 1865. In 1886, the first railroad station was built here. The town experienced some growth during World War II as many servicemen lived here and their families came back to live after the war. Kearney had a population of about 100 people in 1950, but that number decreased to about 50 people by 1970. The population increased again to about 100 people by 1990, but then decreased again to around 60 people by 2000.

This company operated a sawmill and grist mill until 1915 when they closed down due to economic conditions. For many years there have been no major businesses operating in or around town as most residents supported themselves through agriculture or other means. In 2007 construction began on a new large shopping mall which will include an arena/parking lot for local high school sports teams and several thousand dollars worth of retail space including KFC, Sears, JCPenney and Macy's department stores as well as dozens of small businesses who will be able to survive without big box store closings but still provide jobs for their employees
