Kearney, Nebraska has a long and rich history of shooters, both professional and amateur. The city was founded in 1868 by pioneer ranchers as the Kearney Valley Ranching Center. Today, Kearney is one of the most vibrant and interesting cities in Western Nebraska, home to an active shooter community that includes both recreational shooters and those who take their hobby seriously. The first shootings in Kearney occurred in 1872 when two men were shot at a game of ducks by local farmers. The shootings continued sporadically until 1886 when a group of seven men consisting of Surveyor General Edwin Drake, rancher Charley Chase, attorney James Waugh, banker Augustus Kelley and other businessmen organized what would become the Pioneer Rifle Club. The club constructed a shooting gallery on top of the courthouse that served as their headquarters for practicing their sport. In 1893, another group of entrepreneurs formed the Omaha Rifle Association which became one of the most powerful organizations in town. The NRA hired lobbyists to get state government to pass laws regulating firearms so that people could own them legally. They also lobbied for passage of gun control measures at the federal level which led to increased regulation of firearms throughout America starting in 1903. In response to this legislation, many pro-gun advocates left Omaha for Kearney where they began lobbying city officials to relax restrictions on firearms. Assembling enough signatures was finally able to get City Council approval for enactment of Municipal Arms Control Ordinance No 2 on November 3rd 1906 which granted citizens authorization to carry pistols without prior registration or permit from law enforcement officers only if they were openly carrying such weapons while not assembling any other items within 100 feet thereof during business hours (later amended). Since then, Kearney has seen an increase in its number ofshooters with both amateurs and professionals operating out there under various names including: Police Firearms Division (PFD), Pistol Section (PS), Shooting Sport/Coin Gun Club (SSGC), Cowboy Shooters Association (CSA) & now just called “Kearney Residents” because we have embraced our open Carry lifestyle! It is safe to say that our city has always been Home away from Home for muzzleloader enthusiasts around the world!

The first people to live in what is now Kearney were the Hennepin Sioux and their federally recognized tribe, the Otoe Sioux. In 1854, General A.J. Beauregard named this area Kearney after General James Fenton Kearny who had fought for Great Britain in the Mexican-American War and then served as a U.S. colonel during the American Civil War (1861-1865). In 1915, Standard Oil Company built a refinery here that has been operational ever since. This refinery helped make Kearney an important center for oil production and commerce in eastern Nebraska and also helped contribute to its growth as a business community. The industry has declined over time but it remains an important part of local life with many businesses still active today including several banks and restaurants. Today's economy relies heavily on agriculture which accounts for about one-third of the town's revenue.
