Kearney is a town in Kearney County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Omaha-Council Bluffs-Fremont, NE Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Kearney was Jethro M. Cook on July 9, 1868. The town was platted on January 14, 1869 by John W. Pritchett and James Schieffer from New York City as a town center for the new railroad construction being made through that area. On December 5, 1870 Kearney had a population of 136 and built its first schoolhouse which still stands today in what is now the business district of the town. In 1875 Kearney opened its doors to retail trade with a store operated by A L Mahoney & Brothers which became well known around the country for its quality groceries including fresh produce and meat products. In 1902 when it merged with other towns within its own county to form Council Bluffs they named their new municipal building after General George Armstrong Custer (1863-1929) who had served as Mayor of Omaha during that time period before his death at Fort Harrison near Council Bluffs in 1929. During World War II Kearny played an important role in providing material support to military installations all over western Nebraska and also furnished labor for war production throughout central Nebraska including manufacturing munitions plants and ammunition storage areas inland from Omaha such as Mount Rushmore Ammunition Storage Facility located just east of Kearney on US 95 northbound between I-80 exit 164 and exit 165 minutes west of Omaha).
