The history of the coast guard in La Vista, Nebraska can be traced back to 1861 when the first Captain H.F. Smith founded the La Vista Volunteer Coast Guard. The first uniforms were purchased from a local store and worn by members of the town’s militia. The Coast Guard was originally made up of men who were recruited from La Vista’s fishing industry. In 1912, a new station was built on the current site of City Hall and additional personnel were hired to man it. The Coast Guard also became responsible for providing security at local ports and guarding against piracy. La Vista is a town in La Vida County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. La Vista was founded in 1880 by John A. Smith and his wife Anna L. (Neeve) Smith. It has been located in La Vida County since its founding. The town of La Vista was platted on October 4, 1880 by J.A. Smith and his wife Anna L., both natives of Scotland who had emigrated to America the previous year. The community's name comes from the Spanish word "Lavia" meaning "vale." The city of Omaha took over most of what was once La Vista land and development ceased until it too amalgamated with other cities in 1907 when Nebraska became a state; however, much of the original growth still occurs within present-day La Vista boundaries including downtown and east side streets which run parallel to each other forming an 'oval' shape around the center squareblockage area that includes powwow grounds for Native American tribes as well as businesses associated with agriculture such as grain elevators, chicken coops, fruit trees, and dairy farms today providing evidence that this 'oval' area has been continuously inhabited for more than 100 years!
