On July 1, 1912, the territory was renamed to Nebraska. On January 1, 1915, La Vista became a city. The first mayor of La Vista was Amedee Butler.
La Vista was founded in 1854 by John and Eliza Hickey. The Hickeys were pioneers who cleared the land for a post office, which they named La Vista after their home town of La Crosse, Wisconsin. In 1863, the post office was moved to what is now Omaha. The name of the town changed again in 1885 when it became part of Nebraskan Territory. At this time, La Vista became known as Omaha City.
