Lexington, Nebraska is a small town in the state of Nebraska. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1868 and named after Lexington, Kentucky. It is located in Lincoln County. The first settlers to the area were farmers who came from Illinois and Indiana. They built log cabins and started a mill that produced flour and other goods for local markets. In 1870, they organized a township referendum to name their new town after General David Hunter Snedeker who had been killed in battle two years earlier during the American Civil War. The vote resulted in overwhelmingly supporting the name change - 72% of voters approved it! In 1872, the first school was built in Lexington. It was called the "First Schoolhouse" because it was constructed on land donated by John Auldridge - one of the early settlers. Over time, more schools were built including a high school (1877), junior college (1910), and post-secondary educational institution (1975). Today, there are six schools in Lexington - three public schools and three private schools - all serving students from pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade. The economy of Lexington has always been based on agriculture with crops such as corn, wheat, oats, soybeans, potatoes, hay, straws and cotton being grown hereabouts. Agriculture has since changed to include manufacturing as well but most employment remains within agriculture today due to its importance for local economies throughout Lincoln County . Manufacturing activity has included leather tanning; trucking; printing; plastics manufacture; vehicle production; food processing/manufacturing/ retail services etc.; however much recent manufacturing activity has shifted towards service businesses such as health care providers/nurses or restaurants etc., which have found support within Lincoln County's growing business communities . In addition to many small businesses existing within this agricultural sector there are also several large commercial entities which have thrived here over time including GrainCorp Pioneer Corporation (a grain elevator & storage company) & BASF AG PlasticsUSA Inc., both of which are major producers of advanced plastic products (e.g., medical adhesive removers) & paper products respectively
