By 1870, Lexington had become a bustling agricultural center with an extensive livestock and crop production program. In 1902, the town became the county seat of Lincoln County. The population of Lexington peaked at over 10,000 in 1920 but declined precipitously during the Great Depression. However, due to new economic development in the area and increased tourist visitation, the population rebounded by 1930 and has remained high ever since. In recent years, Lexington has seen significant growth in its cultural significance as a center for art and music education. The city's Museum of Art is one of the largest art museums in North America and features some of the most renowned artists in history including Adolphus Wright and Edward Munch. Additionally, several prominent colleges located within walking distance of downtown provide access to artistic programs that are unavailable elsewhere.
