The Marine Corps has deployed gift history in Lexington, Nebraska for more than a century. The first Marines stationed in the city were members of Company F of the 1st Battalion, 8th Marines, which was established on December 12, 1881. Companies A and B (the future 2nd and 3rd Battalions) arrived in Lexington on April 9, 1892. By 1912 there were three companies each: Company C (organized on October 15, 1912), Company D (organized on November 25, 1913) and Company E (dissolved January 7, 1915). The city became an important military depot during World War I because it could store munitions and equipment needed by the Marine Corps. The Marines also used Lexington as a training base from 1916 to 1918. In 1924 the City of Lexington contracted with the United States Naval Supply Depot to deliver goods such as foods and clothing to Marines stationed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. The first gifts given by Marines to civilians came during World War II when they donated war supplies such as gasoline cans and water jugs to local businesses. In 1945 Captain James “Jimmy” Hennessey gave away bicycles to help individuals purchase food ration cards. From 1946 until 1951 marines exchanged Christmas trees with citizens of Wichita Falls, Texas. Gifts became more common during the Korean War when marines brought candy bars and other snacks back from that conflict. They also distributed presents at home bases throughout South Korea after liberation in September 1950. In 1952 marine Corporal Alonzo Jeter created a small fund called Operation Gratitude which collected donations for local charities such as St John’s Evangelist Church and First Baptist Church across Lexington . This fund continued operation until 1976 when Corporal Jeter passed away at the age of 77 years old due to pancreatic cancer.. His donation helped support many programs within our community including providing freezers for homeless families; soup kitchens; scholarships for young people who have lost their homes; housing projects for veterans; Christmastime tree giveaways year-round; new snow machines for kids' slopes; holiday concerts throughout the school year...and much more! He is remembered not only through his generosity but also through his spirit which continues today within our Marine battalion detachment located in Lexington's Waterfront Park
