In 1855, the Nebraska Territory was created from the Iowa Territory. The Nebraska Territory was divided into two parts by the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 which designated Missouri as the eastern border of the new territory and set off a period of turmoil for years to come. The western border of what would become Lincoln, NE had not been determined when the territory was created. On July 1, 1855, General John C. Fremont ordered his brigade to march east from Council Bluffs on what would be the first stage of their invasion of Nebraska. They were met by a force under Colonel James Wylie who ordered them to retreat and disband. This event is often considered one of the turning points in American history as it demonstrated that military power could not easily control these areas without hostilities breaking out. One year later on December 24th, 1856, Captain Hannibal Hamlin's 2nd Regiment Missouri Volunteer Infantry arrived at Omaha Beach in Normandy with orders to free American citizens who had been imprisoned there since September 25th. As they disembarked their boats they were met by gunfire from British artillery batteries which forced them back offshore and began shelling their landing beaches until reinforcements arrived. Aftermath show that over 400 men died in this engagement; however it is widely considered one of America's most successful naval engagements during World War II due to itslow casualties and quick success at liberating Allied prisoners-of-war camps

Lincoln, Nebraska is a town in Kearney County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 941 at the 2010 census. Lincoln is the county seat of Kearney County. It was founded by immigrants from Sweden and Denmark in 1854. The first store in Lincoln opened in 1855. The city was incorporated as a city on January 25, 1904. The Omaha–Council Bluffs Railway reached Lincoln on November 15, 1899. In 1909 the Union Pacific Railroad reached Lincoln and freight trains stopped there until 1964 when passenger service began again. The history of Lincoln goes back to 1854 when Swedes and Danes immigrated to Nebraska Territory from Illinois and Wisconsin respectively. They were followed soon after by Germans and Irishmen who had also come to Nebraska during the same period of time. These groups all worked together to build up what would become Lincoln; one of Nebraska's earliest towns! In fact, it wasn't until 1862 that an act was passed which allowed for the establishment of a post office in the town! This act came about because many residents needed to get mail they couldn't get delivered through their homes! It didn't take long for businesses to form around what would become downtown; busy shops such as Mr. Bick's Bakery started up right away! By 1865, there were over 20 businesses operating within what is now downtown! One can only imagine how busy things must have been during those early years! As time went on though business became more difficult due to transportation problems; people had to go far away or else they risked being out of money while trying to receive mail! It wasn't until 1895 that an electric streetcar system arrived which made life much easier for citizens living outside of downtown! This new addition not only made traveling around town much easier but it also helped bring income into our community!! Unfortunately though, this streetcar line closed down just two years later :( However, another option did come along; a railroad!!! This new arrival not only improved transportation but it also Increased commerce within the town!! So even though the streetcar line failed miserably (due primarily to financial difficulties) another option DID succeed- railroads!!!! Which brings us nicely upto date with our story... In 1904/5 hometowns formed an election board which selected candidates for local offices including Mayor & City Councilman…the first ever such thing in these fledgling days!!! With such great progress being made however things quickly went wrong when two members resigned en route home!, turning everything over permanently to someone other than elected officials!!! Things got so bad that finally on January 25th 1906 Mayor John A Halleck called for a special meeting which determined that “City government should be performed by …a committee” consisting of three citizens: Wm Halsey (Mayor), John Ransom (Vice Mayor), Charles Fenton (Justice). At this point things looked bad because we had no mayor & no way of selecting committee members !!!!!!!!! But thankfully Municipal President illegitimately vetoed this measure thereby saving our sorry situation!!!!! From hereon out city hall functioned according to law!!!!! Let's move swiftly forward shall we?
