The Nebraska National Guard was organized on November 15, 1861, as a result of the Lincoln crisis. The Guard first served in the Union army during the American Civil War and then fought in the Mexican–American War. In 1898, when Nebraska became a state, its military organization underwent a series of changes that included the establishment of an infantry regiment called the 1st Nebraska Volunteer Infantry Regiment. On October 9, 1907, this regiment was redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Company Minnesota National Guard (HQ-MN), which is still inactive today. In 1917, Congress passed legislation authorizing states to establish their own militias for home defense purposes if they were not already performing such duties within the federal government. As a result of this law, Nebraska voted to join what was then called the New Mexico Militia and two days later signed an ordinance ratifying this decision. On February 20th of that year HQ-MN received its new nickname—the Lincoln militia—and began operations under this name throughout Lincoln County. On May 12th Governor O’Neill declared all militias statewide effective and ordered unit commanders to report to headquarters at once should any situation arise requiring their deployment or service. In 1933 HQ-MN relocated from Omaha to Kearney due to some concerns about potential attacks by Nazi Germany during World War II. After being here for nearly forty years HQ-MN finally disbanded on July 1st 2003 due to budgetary cuts across all state guard units nationwide. However in its time it has been credited with playing an important role in social stability and helping protect citizens from crime in downtown Omaha during both local riots andnational events such as presidential inauguration ceremonies

George Washington Lincoln worked hard to keep America running smoothly during his father's lifetime and passed away at age ninety-four in 1893. Despite George Washington Lincoln's short life span, he left an impressive legacy behind him as one of America's most influential presidents. He played a major role in creating both the American Civil War and Reconstruction after the war ended; he also helped create modern day american society by helping pass laws like The New Deal and The Great Society. In addition to his achievements as a president, George Washington Lincoln also had a long career as a U S Congressman from Illinois where he represented many districts throughout Illinois during various periods of political change such as World War I (1914-18) and II (1929-1933). Overall, George Washington Lincoln was an accomplished man who has left an lasting impact on American history.
